Bayard Taylor, in one of his loiters from Canton to the Vew] York Tribune, gives the following description of his first attempt to smoke opium: "In spite of the penalties attached to it by Chinese law, the smoking of opium is scarcely a concealed practice at present. I have aeon it carried on in open shops in Shanghai, where there are some streets which are never free from the sickening smell. It had always been my intention to make a trial of the practice, in order to loam its effects by nerson-il n<n?nan?? v.?!.~ ? | ? rv*avuvv 9 wwv* unii^ iiviyt via inu eve of leaving China, applied to a gentleman residing here to put me iu the way or enjoying a pipe or two. Hj was well acquainted with a Chluato in who is addicted to tho practice, and by an agreement with hiin, took mo to hie house I tat evening. Wo were ushered into a long room, with a divan or platform, about three feet high at tho further end. Several Chin ttnou wero in the room, and one, stretched out on the platform, was preparing his plpo at a lamp ? The host invited me to stretch myself opposite to him, and place my head upon one of those cune head-stool s which serve the Chinese in lieu of pillows. "The opium-pipo is a bamboo stick about two foet long, having a small drum inserted near tho end, with an aperture in its centre. A piece of opium, about twice the size of a pin's hoad, is taken up on a slender wire and held in tho fl nno of tho lamp until it boils or bubbles up, when it is rolled irto s cylindrical shape on the drum, by tho aid of the wire. It loses its d irk color by the heating and becomes and soft, Having been sufficiently rolled, it is placed over the apofture, and tho wire, after being thrust through its centre, to allow the air to pass info the pipe, is withdrawn. The pipe is then hold to the flame, and as the opium burns, its fumes are drawn into tho lungs by a strong mid long-continued inspiration. In about half a minute the portion ia exhausted, and the smoker is ready for a second pipe. "To my surprise I found the taste of the drug us delicious as it einell is disagreeable. It leaves a deep rich flavor, like the finest liquorice, upon tho palate, and the gentle stimulns it communicates to the blood in tno lungs, till* thu whole body with a sen* sation of warmth end strength. The fumes of the opium are no more irritating to the windpipe or bronchial tube-', than common air while they seem imbued w ith a richness of vitality far beyond our diluted oxygen. I ha<l supposed that opium was smoked entirely for the purpose of mental exhilaration, and that to the smokers, as to many who in* toxicate themselves with ardent spirits there there wua no sensual gratification in the mere t.ste of the article. The reverse ia undoubtedly the truth, and the praetice, therefore Is doubly dangerous. Its victim besoms* hopelessly involved in its f.i?<-iu?ting allusions, and an awful death, such as I witnessed not long since, is sure, sooner or later to overtake him who indulges to excess. I have pretty strong coufldence in niy own power of resistance, but nothing could.indoco ine to make the experiment a second time. 44Beyond the fading of warmth, vigor and increased vitalitv: ?ol\??iiad hv a h>ni,v -- ? - "-rr/ aciousncss of repose, there was no ett'ecl, until after finishing the sixth pip*'. My spirits then became joyously excited, with a constant disposition to lough ; brilliant colors flouted before my eyes, but in a confused and clouded way, sometimes converging into spots like the eyes in a peacock's tail, but oflcncst molting into sod through each other, like the hues of changeable ailk.? Had the physical excitement been greater, they would have taken form ami substance, but after amoking nine pipes I desisted, through fear of subjecting myself to some unpleasant after-effect. Our Chinese host informed me that he was obligod to take twenty pipes, in order to slsvats his mind to the pitch of perfect happiness. I went home feeling rather giddy, and became so drowsy, with slight qualms of the stomach, that I went to bed at an early hour. I had made an arrangement to walk around the walla of Centos this morning, with Mr. Benney, and felt some doubt aa to whether I should be able to undertake it; after e deep and refreshing sleep, 1 arose at ton rise feeling stronger and brighter than 1 h d A _I . ? mviic ivr wit*? He met death with calmness and oonrposure, and in a spirit of resignation ; and his mind was clear and unclouded tnthe Inst. He spoko rationally and physiologically about his disease in its progress to its fatal termination* and w hen upon him he described the throes to his friends, and the feelings which he experienced in passing from this stage of action, and continued to do so until a few moments before life was extinct. His disease was of a complicated character, and protracted severely for several weeks'. His father dying when he was young, he, with his four brothers and sisters, (all small c' ildren) were left under the sole ilfknngement and control of his mother, who foudly an I tenderly doted upon them, and it might well be expected that he had a dangerous road to travel, expo ted to tho temptations and hazards of life incident to youth but amid all his deprivations, his course was moat fortunate and his conduct most correct. He steadily evinced a determination to do his part towards fitting, himself for the business of life and the discharge of duty. As fur as his limited means would permit, he most industriously and pcrscveringly w ent to work to acquire un education; and that he might be instructed by the best teachers, he incurred voluntarily, the expense of board ing ami tuition from home. After having finished his Academical studies, he commenced the study of mediciae with his brother, Dr. Robkrt McDow, and was most industriously and closely engaged in its study, when he was last placed upon the bed of affliction. The deceased Was remarkable for morality and virtue?he w as strong and decided in his attachments, and gentlemanly in hit whole deportment. Temperance, as a principle* was recognized and practice! by him, and suffering humanity found a ready friend in him. He w.ts a member of the temperance association at the time of his death.
