* From the Star Spangled Banner. t Tho Plemourea and Pains of Kemorj. j1 Memory is one of the most precious gifts t which our Heavenly Father has so kindly t> bestowed upon us. When wearied with , the cares and perplexities of life, and dis- , gustod with its vanity and heaHlessncSS, . now fendly we turn to memory's storehouse and call up from the grave of years, the hidden, but not forgotten pleasures and pains " of other days. There, deep in the cherished ti casket, lio gems of priceless value; gems, 1: that not all the wealth of ancient Ophir 1 could cause us to relinquish. Pictured in c glowing colors that the hand of time may not obliterate, are bright and gladsomo scenes of childhood's happy hours?when t the heart knew naught of sorrow and sadness?when around our pathway bright " flowers were ever springing, and our azure e sky all fair and cloudless seemed. n And there, too, deep in its recesses, are d faces of loved and cherished friends, long ^ mouldering in the silent tomb ; years may have intervened since last we gazed upon fiem, yet again they rise boforo us, fuir and bright as in the days long since passed away. We hear again their merry laughter t as they join us in our childish sports, and | we forget that fur different scenes and as'sociations are around us now. But soon u we awake?our fanciful dream has vanish cd?and we sigh for thoso pleasures forever 11 'passed. a Observe yon aged sire ns he sits medita- c ting on the events of his past life : he d thinks of the scenes of his boyhood?of | * 'his loved home and the familiar countenances t associated with it, whom tho unrelenting c 'hand ol death has snacthed from his side. c 'See his eyes fill with tears as lie thinks of 'fholiiVppy children by whom he was onco * "surrounded?whose smiling faces and merry ' 'prattle oft greeted him nl his rcttra from c the labors and fatigues of the day. Alas! r they are gone, and he is left alone solitary b and forlorn. But he is yet happy in the c consciousness that ho shall soon meet them H in a butter iand?in thut heaven of eternal 'rest, where the sorrow of parting shall be . 'known no more. Reflecting, however painful, is not with- c out its advantages; for by reviewing the Iportion of time that has fled, We learn ex- t Jpcricnco; the errors w>o have committed c stand forth as beacon* to warn us away jj Cross the paths where we yielded to tempts- t| tVen atld fell. And let us improve the time that ia so swiftly passing away, so that in ,J nftor years when we review these scenes, ? it may be unmingled with regret. A Runaway Nr.gro at J!at.?The Fell- a <einna (Lb) Whig, of April 'JO, has the fob v lowing: On Saturday last, a runaway negro 0 was killed in the Parish of Fast Raton Rouge, just below the line of this parish, un- 8 der the following circumatancea : Two citi- r' zens of Port Hudson, learning that a negro w as at work on a flat boat, loading with sand ? just below that place, who was suspected as c being a runaway, went down in a skiff for r the purposu of arresting bim. r Having seized him and put him into the skifl', they started back, hut had not proceed. * ed far when the negro was at the oars, seized " a hatchet and assaulted one of them, wound- '' ing him very seriously. A scuffle ensued, t in which both parties felt overborrd. They t were both rescued by tho citizens pulling to a them with the skiff. Finding hiui so un- t, inanageble, the negro was put ashore, and H the parties returned to Port Hudson for Srius and a pack of negro dogs, and started again ' with the intention to capture him. 1 hey 11 soon got ? n hia trail, and when found again J he waa standing at bay upon the outer of a c large raft of drift wood armed with A club f and pistol. In this position bade defiance to men and dojgs?knocking tho latter into the water with his club, and resolutely threatening death to any man who approached c liiui. Finding him obstinately determined , not to surrender, one of hia pursuers shot ? tiiio. He fell at the first fire, and so deter- j mined was he not to be captured, that when an effort was made to rescue him from 0 drowning, he made battle with his club, and ^ sunk, waving hta weapon in angry n?n?ncc ? ' at hi* pursuer*, lie refused to give the name y of his owner. ] Mercantile Advertising.?There i?, j perhaps, no city in the world which at this 'J time i* making Mich rapid progress in f wealth and importance as New York.? | Improvement of every kind is going forward there at a rate which has never been paralleled in the history of any similar * metropolis nntNshich seems to hid de v fiance tocoinpctition.
