P. Henderson, of Knox ville, Tenn.; O. L. Hailey of Nash ville, Tenn.; J. H. Anderson, oi Knoxville, Tenn., and George E Hayes of Louisiana. Reading the report on chaplains provoked a lively discussion this af ternoon as to the propriety of a Baptist minister receiving pay from the government, was contrary to the Baptist principle of the absolute ' separation of the church and state, but the report, which provides for the entrance of Baptist preachers in to the service, was approved. Dedicatory services on the site of the church to be erected here as a national Baptist memorial to religi ons liberty were attained by the mes sengers this afternoon. Sscretary of the Navy Daniels headed the listf of speakers which included Dr. Gam brell, president of the convention, and Dr. McGlothlin. A telegram of formal greeting from the Northern Baptist conven tion, extending its best .wishes for successful deliberations, was read to the convention. Work of the Baptist Bible insti tute at New Orleans and its plans for the future were described by pro fessors of the institute. Prof. R. P. Mahone, the foreign language teacher, told the institute's facilities for preparing men and wo men to carry the Baptist faith to France and Italy in the tongue of those countries. The proximity of the institute to Central and South Amer ica, he said, offers a wonderful op portunity to educate Spanish-speak ing missionaries for work in the southern republics. On the recommendation of the committee, rais'ing the $75,000,000 fund, a permanent commission to carry on the work of the fund was appointed. The members are: Dr. L. R. Scarborough, chairman, Texas; Dr. George W. Truett, Texas; Dr. George W. McDaniel,, Virginia; Dr. Allen Fort, Tennessee; Dr. M. E. Dodd, Louisiana; Dr. C. W. Daniel, Georgia; Dr. L. G. Broughton, Ten nessee, and all board secretaries, state secretaries, and the president and secretary of the women's mis sionary union. Treatment of Common Colds. The examination for the award of vacant Scholarships in Winthrop College and for the admission of new students will be held at the County Court House on Friday, July 2, at 9- a. m. Applicants must be not less than sixteen years of age. When Scholarships are vacant after July 2 they will be awarded to those mak ing the highest average at this ex amination. Provided they meet the conditions governing the award. Ap plicants for Scholarships - should write to President Johnson before the examination for Scholarship ex amination blanks.
