Miss Josie Sheppard left on Friday last to accept a position in the hotel at Caesar's Head for the remaiuder of the summer. The managemeut of this very popular resort bas had an ex ceptionally fine season. There are now more than a hundred g lests at the hotel. The ladies of the mission socie ty of the Baptist church realized $38 from their barrel opening at Mrs. A. E. Padgett's ou Tuesday afteruooo. A talk by Mr. Kent?ro Shioi on missionary work in Japan was greatly enjoyed by the eighty odd ladies present. Elegant re freshments were served. All the young ladies present and about half of the married ladies fell in love with the youug Jap. Within the past six months Miss Eliza Mims, Edgefield's very gif-.ed artist whose reputation cou tiuues to grow, has painted sever al large portraits in oil and all of tbpm have not ouly proven sat isfactory but have been greatly admired. Twelfth Birthday. Master J. T. Harling, the only son of Cashier aud Mrs. W. H Hading, was the charming little host of a delightful birthday party on Monday afternoon. A laige number of little folks were honor ed with :.nvitatious and the after noon was ppssed very pleasantly. All of the modern games-games that we older peoplo know nothing of-wero engaged in, ai/.d after the guests were surfeited on play and sport, they enjoyed very de lighful refreshments. Should Raise Colts. One rarely ever sees a mule colt uow-a-days. There ought to be oue in the lot of every farmer iu the county. Mr. Walter L. Nicholson was in town on Saturday and hie mare was followed by a Gue mule colt. Mr. Nicholson stated to this scribe that he had another colt at home. If every farmer who oper ates a two or three-hcrse farm would raise a colt every year, the westeru stock raisers would not make sui h heavy inroads upou the purses of th6 people of our county. Hollaud is doing bis utmost to make the school a success and is exceeding ly anxious to have a large at tendance during the eutire two weeks. Every teacher it; the coun ty should atteud. The Trolley Meeting. In response to the call from the incorporators of xhe projected holley line, quite a number of J representative citizens assembled in the court house on Weduesday last to devise ways and meaus of carrying forward tho enterprise. Mr. W. P. Calbouu acted as chair man. Different phases of the un dertaking were discussed by W. P. Calhoun, J. C. Sheppard, A. S.'Torapkius and W. J Gaines. A resolution was adopted authori zing or instructing the committee to solicit funds with which to have a survey of the line made from Augusta to Greenwood via Edgefield. It is estimated that the survey will cost $1,500. Met With Greenwood Candi dates. Greenwood campaign. Public Roads Being Worked. Supervisor J. R. Blocker is pressing forward with all possi ble haste in the matter of working the public, roads of tht) county The Newberry road bas recently been worked from Edgefield to the Saluda Hue; the Long Cane rond has been worked from near Johnston to the Sleepy Cr9ek bridge, a Dd the convict force is now at work on the Ninety Six road. As soon as this road is put in "apple pie'' or 1er, work will be commenced on the Blocker road, which is now probably the worst public road in the couoty. Owing to the tremendous mileage of the public roads in the county, it is almost im^opsible, with the limit ed resources at commaud, to keep the roads in goo ' condition. Capt. Blocker says the entire length of th? pnblic roads is about 1,700 miles, of which the main thor oughfares aggregate 1,100 miles and the less important about 600.
