Should Raise Colts.
One rarely ever sees a mule colt
uow-a-days. There ought to be oue
in the lot of every farmer iu the
county. Mr. Walter L. Nicholson
was in town on Saturday and hie
mare was followed by a Gue mule
colt. Mr. Nicholson stated to this
scribe that he had another colt at
home. If every farmer who oper
ates a two or three-hcrse farm
would raise a colt every year, the
westeru stock raisers would not
make sui h heavy inroads upou
the purses of th6 people of our
county.

Public Roads Being Worked.
Supervisor J. R. Blocker is
pressing forward with all possi
ble haste in the matter of working
the public, roads of tht) county
The Newberry road bas recently
been worked from Edgefield to
the Saluda Hue; the Long Cane
rond has been worked from near
Johnston to the Sleepy Cr9ek
bridge, a Dd the convict force is
now at work on the Ninety Six
road. As soon as this road is put
in "apple pie'' or 1er, work will be
commenced on the Blocker road,
which is now probably the worst
public road in the couoty. Owing
to the tremendous mileage of the
public roads in the county, it is
almost im^opsible, with the limit
ed resources at commaud, to keep
the roads in goo ' condition. Capt.
Blocker says the entire length of
th? pnblic roads is about 1,700
miles, of which the main thor
oughfares aggregate 1,100 miles
and the less important about 600.
