E?kefield Advertiser J. JJ. M IMS, - - - EDITOR TERMS: , ONE^YEAR . $1.50 SIX MONTHS 75 WEDNESDAY, AUG. 28, 1907. Experience tells us that each tuan most keenly and unerring- ? ly detects in others the vice | with which/he is most familiar | himself.-ROBERTSON. J Ye loafers aud vagrau ts, betake yourselves to the cotton fields. Thirteen cents to be the mini mum price. ThereV nothing un lucky about that. The opeiators aud the telegraph companies are both claiming a victory but a longsuffering-public is inclined to the opinion that neither have won. The county dispensary has beou retained in Bamberg by a majori ty of ouly 27 votes. The total vote cast was only about half that of the regular primary. Kisres 6eem to be advancing along with everything else. A Chicago judge fined a'saucy youDg mau $100 for imprinting a k*iE3 on the cheek of a fair maiden. Th** people of Frauce aud Ger many eat dog aud horse fl?sh but look askance at American beef aod pork-another blow to the pack ing houses. The oat crop, out west, is very short: If you have home-grown oats for-sale, (io uot be in a hurry to Bell. You take uo risk; in hold ing them aud may realizo a better price as sowing time approaches. _,_- ^ The odds aud euds cf the old state dispensary stock* have been purchased by .the Richland county dispensary board for $10,000, which is regarded as a good trade for both sides. More houses are needed in Edg?field. Several families are anxious to move to Edgefield in order to avail themselves of onr eplendid educational advantages but there is not a house to be had. M?rse, Marconi and others who have been instrumental in perfect ing the telegraphic art are among the world's . greatest .benefaat from strikes The Cotton Growers' Associa tion of Spartanburg county has fixed the minimum price for cot ton at 13 cents. It is worth that and more. Not a pouud of the crop of'1907 should be sold for less. Both candidates for governor in Mississippi are ardent prohi bitionists. That looks like Missis sippi is soon to follow in Georgia's footsteps. Gov. Glenn, of North Carolina, who has been so gener ally commended for his bold stund in the fight against the railroads, is. also an out-aDd-out prohibitionist. Another cotton ..chopper has just been invented. Is it not strange that much is sai I. of cot ton chopping machines when there is no cotton to chop and of cotton picking machines when there is not cotton to pick? If anybody has a cotton picker that will do the work, now is tho time for him to trot it out; not wait till next spring. If uUncle Sam" maintains his regular army, he will have to pay his soldiers more. There are few enlistments and many desertions on account, of the small salaries paid. The strong, able-bodied men who wear the uniform can now se cure better salaries on the farms than they receive for undergoing the hardships of camp life. * Anderson has passed an ordi nance making it unlawful for boys of tender years to be on the streets alone after 10 o'clock at night. This is all right provided the hour be changed to 8 instead of 10 o'clock. No boy should be upou the streets alter nightfall ; in fact, it would be far better if they were not allowed to loaf aud loiter upou the streets either day QT night. Mouey is a great power, influ encing oftentimes, consciously or unconsciously, judges upon the bench. John F. Gaynor, the great defrauder, who has been in the Macou jail pending an appeal of his case, bas been allowed uuder the plea of failing health to go to the springs, being" accompanied by two deputy sheriffa. An ordinary mortal without mouey would have had medical attention given him in prisou but .would utver have been allowed to leave prison walls for a health resort. ALONE. As I muse at tho; door; of; this dwelling, Where my life is by Destiny throwo, lu my heart th are are dreary thoughts welling, For I sit iu the darkness alone. In the hall there is laughter and singing Naught of grief have those care less ones known But I hear ghostly mern'ry bells ringing; While I sit in the darkness alone. There are eyes into other eyeB beaming; There are hearts of which Love makes a throne ; But for me, ouly. dreariest dream ing- f I must sit in the darkness alone 1 In the morn, brightest hopes for my gaiuing-" In the noon "of ray life all are flown ; For the sheaves, only leaves are remaining, x^ndlsitin the dark uess alone 1 Blessed Christ, Thou wert lonely so often, And thou hearest each heart broken moan Help ms serve Thee, my sorrow to soften, "As I sit in the darkness alone. EMI?IE G. PADGETT. Maiden, S. C. Meeting of Trolley Committees. The meeting of the com mittees in the office of Chairman B. E. Nicholson ou Thursday la?t was indeed very encouraging. Busiueas men discussed the mat ter in hand in a mopt business like manner. Co th< I let rut M* Che Me ital Awarded tho Iitira&nied Gen. R. G. El. Baaovani for Dis* ting-uished Service. . Several days ago it was the writer's privilege to see the hand iome gold medal that waa awarded ?o the lamented Gen. R. G. M Dunovant bf the State for dis ;inguiebed service rendered in the VIexicaM war as a member of the mmortal Palmetto regiment. It s the possession of our fellow :ownsman, Mr. Robert L. Duno ?ant. The medal is of solid gold ind. is mucbr larger and thicker .hana silver dollar, the bullion /alue beiog something like $80. At the time the Mexican war urokoout Gen. Duuovant. was a /oung physician, rpsidingin Tex is. He immediately returned to nis former home in ("hester coun :y and organized tho first compa ny of the Palmetto regiment ?vbich marched to the fore front of battle and fought alongside the regular army. A braver, more gal lant body of men than the old Pa'lmetto regiment never drew a sword. They went to the front 963 strong and returned with orrly 300 0380. The) e is probably not a mem ber of the regiment now living. The father of our friend Mr Charlie H. Key was a member of this regiment. For gallantry aud dis' ioguisbed service, Gen. Duuovant was steadi ly promoted from the csptamcy, Slling the office of Lieutenant Colonel when the war closed in L847. This beautifully embellish 3d medal is prized by the sons of Sen. Dunovant not because of ita intrinsic value but on account of ?ts association and what it repre sents. ^ It is a beautiful token bestowed by the State of South Carolina i\ ou one of h^r deserving sons For distinguished and appreciated service on the field of battle. Venerable Old Colored Man Trav els Nine Hundred Miles to be Baptized, Among the slaves of Mr. Rob ert. H. Mims when emancipation :ame, was one William Fraser. William, now growo old in yoars iud ricb/in experience,-left Edge fipld soon after returning from th^' Di vi 1 War, through which he weut A'ilhMr. Ed Penn, a brother of Mr. v\ . B. Penn. His career bas been rather a checkered one. For seven years he perved as cook on i vespel and visited nearly every country in the world. During the past, fifteen years he has been living; in Providence, R. I, serv ing as carriage driver for private families raostof the time. "Uncle" William has loug cherished a de sire to reluru to Edgefi?ld, which he says is to him the dearest spot on earth, but lack of funds is whnt kept him away solong. Feeling that he was nearing the end of life's journey, he delayed no long er. Now we have corns to the re markable feature of his visit. "Uncle" William came from Providence to JEdgefi-^ld, a dis-, tauce of 900 miles, to be baptized. aidLbfL.fe^.na?i.?hon^dc (>f. DpportumtreB; TD" . be baptized m the years goneTtry but preferred to wait till he could come home and be immersed in th? Academy branch where his mother was bap tized. This acton the part of this humble and very devout old colored mau is a very unusual oue ind deserves more than passing notice. The ordinance of baptiemwas idministered to Uncle William >y Rev. Michael Morgan on Sun lay afternon. It was witnessed, as ie says, by his "young Mareler and klistiss," Mr. and Mrs. Robert H Jims. t Tho.services at the church pre leding the baptism were iuter 'Sting and impressive. After a alk by "Uncle" William Fraser md several other colored men, ilr. Robert MimB voluntarily .rose and gave utterance to somo appropriate words. Then all pres nt, iucludiug the "young Mars er and Mistiss," exteaded tho igbt hand of fellowship. "Uncle" William will return to ^ovidence in about a week. We pould like to see him remain in Cdgefield. Tho iufluence of his ife would have a beneficial effect ipon the colored people, paiticu arly the younger generation.
