tion of Spartanburg county has
fixed the minimum price for cot
ton at 13 cents. It is worth that
and more. Not a pouud of the crop
of'1907 should be sold for less.
Both candidates for governor
in Mississippi are ardent prohi
bitionists. That looks like Missis
sippi is soon to follow in Georgia's
footsteps. Gov. Glenn, of North
Carolina, who has been so gener
ally commended for his bold
stund in the fight against the
railroads, is. also an out-aDd-out
prohibitionist.
Another cotton ..chopper has
just been invented. Is it not
strange that much is sai I. of cot
ton chopping machines when
there is no cotton to chop and of
cotton picking machines when
there is not cotton to pick? If
anybody has a cotton picker that
will do the work, now is tho time
for him to trot it out; not wait
till next spring.
If uUncle Sam" maintains his
regular army, he will have to pay
his soldiers more. There are few
enlistments and many desertions
on account, of the small salaries
paid. The strong, able-bodied men
who wear the uniform can now se
cure better salaries on the farms
than they receive for undergoing
the hardships of camp life.
* Anderson has passed an ordi
nance making it unlawful for
boys of tender years to be on the
streets alone after 10 o'clock at
night. This is all right provided
the hour be changed to 8 instead
of 10 o'clock. No boy should be
upou the streets alter nightfall ;
in fact, it would be far better if
they were not allowed to loaf aud
loiter upou the streets either day
QT night.
Mouey is a great power, influ
encing oftentimes, consciously or
unconsciously, judges upon the
bench. John F. Gaynor, the great
defrauder, who has been in the
Macou jail pending an appeal of
his case, bas been allowed uuder
the plea of failing health to go to
the springs, being" accompanied by
two deputy sheriffa. An ordinary
mortal without mouey would have
had medical attention given him
in prisou but .would utver have
been allowed to leave prison walls
for a health resort.

Southern. The meeting of the com

Hon. john C. Sheppard intro
duced the following resolution,
which was adopted:
Resolved, That a committee of
three shall be .appointed by the
chairman of this meeting to cor
respond with the. authorities of

authorities of the Seaboard Air
Line Railroad- company as to the
construction of a trolley line to
connect the said electric railroad
with the Seaboard railroad by a
trolley line, .running through the
town of Edge?eld, and thence by
the most practicable route ; and
this meeting pledges its most ac
ti ve co-operation in the work es
tablishing said line. \
It was further agreed to ask Sa
luda, Newberry and Greenwood to
act in concert with the committee.

At the time the Mexican war

of battle and fought alongside the
regular army. A braver, more gal
lant body of men than the old
Pa'lmetto regiment never drew a
sword. They went to the front 963
strong and returned with orrly 300

ber of the regiment now living.
The father of our friend Mr
Charlie H. Key was a member of
this regiment.

ly promoted from the csptamcy,

L847. This beautifully embellish

William has loug cherished a de
sire to reluru to Edgefi?ld, which
he says is to him the dearest spot
on earth, but lack of funds is whnt
kept him away solong. Feeling
that he was nearing the end of
life's journey, he delayed no long
er.
Now we have corns to the re
markable feature of his visit.
"Uncle" William came from
Providence to JEdgefi-^ld, a dis-,
