From the reports that reach us we infer that the grain crop gen erally falls far short ot being what every farmer would like for it to be. Mr. J. C. Morgan, who is ? close observer and a successful farmer, residing near Parksrille, told us on Friday that the grain ou the west-side was exceedingly poor as a whole. Now and thew, here aud there, good spots eould be found. He has about five acres in wheat which was well prppared and highly fertilized, that under ordinary conditions should make more than ICO bushels, from which he does not now expect more than 35. Mr. J. Ransome Timmermau spent Sunday on hi? farm at Pleasant Lane and re ports that the grain is exceeding ly poor in that section. From 45 acres in oatB he does not expect to harvest more than should be made ou eight or ten acreB. The wise farmer will, in view of the partial failure of grain, increase his corn acreage. On Saturday afternoon last Mrs. W. Luther Jonas complimented her little sister, Maria Hill, aud niece, Sadie Mims, with a birth day party. A large number of Edgefield'a future belleB and bsauxj who are enjoying thoir halcyon days, not yet having even entered upou their teens, were the happy recipients of invitations. They began to gather early in the afternoou andaoon th^ra resound ed from this delightful home a perpetual chatter and peals of merry laughter the like of which is seldom heard. These two pretty and fair little hostesses, assisted by Miss Elizabeth Hill and Mrs. Jones, received and entertained their half a hundred guests, in a very beautiful manner. Firemen Need Better Equipment More than a year ago the young men of our towu organized a Fire Department whose chief aim and purpose has been thp protec tion of property. They have work ed hard iu their endeavor to per fect their plans but have been 'seriously handicapped for lack of funds. The council ha6 done what it could in aiding and co operating with these youug men but it, too, has not sufficient funds for equipping the depart ment for efficient service. The department desired to protect and save tbe property in every part of town, which is impossible as it is a: present equipped. The eu gine is too heavy to be pullt-d over our long, steep hills by hand, hence one or mc re horses should be attached to it when au alarm ia given. Furthermore, a bell for sounding fire alarms is needed. Then the firemen .and citizens generally could be awakened without delay. Dwelling Destroyed by Fire; The home of Mrs. C. J. Ashley, who resides on Addison street, was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday night last. The fire was discovered in the attic of the dining room about 12:30 o'clock. A colored boy who was bleeping in the rear of the house was awakened by the smoke and gaye the alarm with the yell of a Comanche Indian. Despite his sonorous voice and the discharge of fire arms, aid was a little slow in arriving, for the inhabitants of our erstwhile quiet town were sojourning in far off Dreamland during the dead hours of night. However, as B-,OU as the alarm was heard assistance-?he kind of men who are not afraid of work, especially in such an exigency-ar rived. The fire had made too rapid headway in the buildiug between the ceiling and roof to extinguish it. Therefore, everybody turned their attention toward saving the household effects and a nearby residence. The firemen, and a brave s fit. of young men they are, arrived with the engine too late tu save the building but kept th? roof of the adjoining residence wet and rendered other valuable assistance. This beautiful flower has been transplanted by His loving hand into the heavenly clime before it bad suffered the blighting iniiuences-of the crosses, trials and sins of earth. In this hour of deep affliction the broken hearted parents have the tenderest sympathy of our . ntire communi ty, which was evidenced by the very huon rous and exceedingly beautiful Moral tributes.
