McKie received a dispatch on Friday lset summon ing her to the bedside of her pie ter, Mies Emma Kingsman, who resided in Charleston. Mts. McKie hastened thither on Saturday but her sister had breathed her last before she reached her. Mis? Kings man was Mrs. McKie's eldest sister and had been as a mother tu her, which makes the bereavement more keenly felt. Mrs. McKie re turned on Monday. She has the sympathy of her Edgefield friends in this hour of grief. Soon after the issuing of las! week's Advertiser, in whicn it was announced that the committees of the senate and House in joint ses sion would hear arguments on Friday afternoon las4t upon the Calhoun county measure, intelli gence reached Edgefield stating that the hearing had been postT poned until to-day, Tuesday, the 31st, A uumber of the representa tive citizens of our town and coun ty are in Columbia for the purpope of doing all in their power to de feat the new county measure be* fore the legislature. The matter will be very ably presented to tbe senate and House committee to day. Mr. Wallace T. Prescott has pur chased Mr. J. H. Mays's interest in the firm of Messrs. May & May. The new firm, which is composed of Mr. L. T May and Mr. W. T. Prescott, will be styled May & Prescott. They have moved from the store occupied by Messrs. May <fe May into the corner store under the opera house. These two popu lar and very deserviug young men have fcons of friends who wish for them a long and very success ful business career. WA have not been informed of Mr. J. H. May's plain for the future but trust that he will remain in Edgefielc1 Mrs. J. B. Haltiwanger has as her gre it her aunt, Mrs. Strickland, of Anderson. Mrs. Strickland is very pleasantly re membered in Edgefield having visited here on several former ic casious. She is not only an exceed ingly refiued and . cultured lady but is possessed of au uuuusually brilliant intellect an.l of very marked musical talent. Mrs. Strickland has a daughter, just budding into young womanhool, who is a musical prodigy. Mrs. Heleu L. Bullook, of El mira, N. Y., the national organi zer of the W. C. T. U. has been invited to visit Edge?eld by the members of the local W. C. T. U. This consecrated, cultured woman will deliver a lecture in the Edge field Baptist church on Sundav afternoon next. She has given hgr life to the elevation of fallen hu manity, going hither and thither appealing to girls, boys, men and women to lead a higher, nobler, purer life. She is not a platform speaker of the sensational type, but in an earnest, lady-like man uer she presents the cause to which she has gi\en ber life. We hope and believe that Mrs. Bul lock will be greeted with a large audience on Sunday afternoon next. Christian Worker.* Conference. Rev. L. A. Cooper, the beloved pastor of the Baptist church at .Jobuston, who is ever zealous in good works, bas arranged for a conference of Christian workers to be held at the Johnston Baptist jhunh February 20-26tb. The Origriu of "The Clansman" Mr. ThomaB Dixon hae achieved fame as an author through hie .two books "The Leopard's Spots" and "The One YVomau". Now a thiri book, entitled "The Clans man", has been given to the world by this southern genius-a North Carolinian. It will be of iuterest to the people of Edgefield to learn of the origin of this story which ie giveu as follows by' a special New York correspondent ' to The State.: Once, while the guest of Senator "Pitchfork" Tillman* in South Carolina, Mr. Dixon heard of a North Carolinian who killed a negro Boldier who bad insulted a white woman on a train. The negro's companion leaped from the train and summoning com rades marched to the depot in time to meet the train. The de fender of the woman's honor had gotten off however, but another white mau was arrostod, charged with killing,-and at a drum head court martial was sentenced to be shot. When the man who did the shooting heard of it he prompt ly surrendered to the black troops and was executed. A mon ument was recently raised to him.
