Mrs. J. B. McKie received a
dispatch on Friday lset summon
ing her to the bedside of her pie
ter, Mies Emma Kingsman, who
resided in Charleston. Mts. McKie
hastened thither on Saturday but
her sister had breathed her last
before she reached her. Mis? Kings
man was Mrs. McKie's eldest sister
and had been as a mother tu her,
which makes the bereavement
more keenly felt. Mrs. McKie re
turned on Monday. She has the
sympathy of her Edgefield friends
in this hour of grief.

gence reached Edgefield stating
that the hearing had been postT
poned until to-day, Tuesday, the

tive citizens of our town and coun
ty are in Columbia for the purpope
of doing all in their power to de
feat the new county measure be*
fore the legislature. The matter
will be very ably presented to tbe
senate and House committee to
day.
Mr. Wallace T. Prescott has pur
chased Mr. J. H. Mays's interest
in the firm of Messrs. May & May.
The new firm, which is composed
of Mr. L. T May and Mr. W. T.
Prescott, will be styled May &
Prescott. They have moved from
the store occupied by Messrs. May

the opera house. These two popu
lar and very deserviug young men
have fcons of friends who wish
for them a long and very success

Strickland has a daughter, just

speaker of the sensational type,
but in an earnest, lady-like man

The Origriu of "The Clansman"
Mr. ThomaB Dixon hae achieved
fame as an author through hie
.two books "The Leopard's Spots"
and "The One YVomau". Now a
thiri book, entitled "The Clans
man", has been given to the world
by this southern genius-a North
Carolinian. It will be of iuterest
to the people of Edgefield to learn
of the origin of this story which
ie giveu as follows by' a special
New York correspondent ' to The
State.: Once, while the guest of
Senator "Pitchfork" Tillman* in
South Carolina, Mr. Dixon heard
of a North Carolinian who killed
a negro Boldier who bad insulted
a white woman on a train. The
negro's companion leaped from
the train and summoning com
rades marched to the depot in
time to meet the train. The de
fender of the woman's honor had
gotten off however, but another
white mau was arrostod, charged
with killing,-and at a drum head
court martial was sentenced to be
shot.
When the man who did the
shooting heard of it he prompt
ly surrendered to the black
troops and was executed. A mon
ument was recently raised to him.
