Dr. Timmons will joiu them the latter part of th is week. He will be ab sent only a week from his office. The admirable discourse which was delivered by Dr. Gwakuey on Sunday morning last cous -d the minds of his hearers to revert to che years that are past aud gone. Would to God that they could re turn again and that we could have our beloved brother with us always. Mrs. W. B. Duckworth, whose stay in Edgefield has been attend ed with sad bereavement in the death of her brother, Mr. Thoma* J. Adams, returned to her home in Brevard, N. C., on Monday. Mauy old acquaintances and school friends visit 3d her while in Edge field end extended their sympa thies. We regret that Mr. L. S Sossa man and his family are to leave Edgefield. He has resigned as superintendent of tb? mill and has accepted a position with a very larg?oil mill in Atlanta. The de parture of such a citizen as Mr. Sossamanfrom any community is a decided loss to that communty. We trust that he will yet reconsid er tue matter and decide to remain with us. There seems to be something permeating the atmosphere round about the S. C. C. I. that causes the lady teachers to be of a matri monial -bent or frame of mind. The faculty has lost a lady teacher each year for three consecutive years by their taking unto them selves a husband. Miss Allie Too'e ?B to be married at her home dur ing this month. While in Edgefield Dr. Gwattrey did not forget the inmates of the county poor bouse. As was his wont, for the past nine years, he preached to t!jem on Sunday af ternoon. At different times dur ing these years Edge^eld bas had quite a uumber of resident minis ters but none have been so laithful and considerate of these uufoi tun ate one6 as has Dr. Gwaltney. May God raise up such another friend to '?-hem. Mr. Wm. H. Nicholson, brother of our esteemed friend, B. E. Nich olson, Esq., having completed the full four year's course at the South Caro1 ina college is now a foll A. B. graduate of that institution. He stands high in the estimation of the faculty and student body and graduates this week with hon ors. But few young men have ever left college walls with a brighter prospect before tbem. We predict thgt Mr. Nicholson will not disap point those who watch with inter est his career. There were ten graduates from the S. C. C. I. this year. The only one completn g the A. B. course was Mr. Calhoun Mays. Those completing tho B. E. course wer?-, Misses Rhett Warren, Ruth Do Loach. Sophie Huggins and and Messers Arthur Mays sud Robt. Black. Of the ten gradu ates six are from Edgefield coun ty Honors Rightly Bestowed. Edgefield is again honored through the honors rightly be stowed upon two of ber eons. The annual meeting cf tbertrand lodge of the Knights of Honor, which embraces every lodge in the Unit ed States, is now being held, in Cleveland, Ohio. Two Edgefield knights are in a'tendance, Hon. J. C. iShcppard, who is the second highes* official, Supreme Vice-Dic tator of the grand lodge, and Dr. J. Glover Tompkins, who is the representative )f the South. Carc lina g;aud lodge. Thc Indefatigable Worker. The doors of the S. C. C. I. are closed. Col. F. N. K. Bailey, hav ing rounded up the year s work has joined his family in Green ville. He expects to retire to some quiet retreat in the heart of the mountains of Western North Car olina, lay aside trmporarily all thoughts cf business and give him ftej f nypr to rest and recuperation^ After regaining his accustomed streugth be will begin his Summer campaign, not political, however. He will marsha! bis foi ces and put them in the field to canvass in the interest of the S. C. C. I. The ses sion of 1902-1903 will eclipse all previous sessions. A Merited Token. The corps of cadets presented Capt. R.B.Cain with a very hand some gold watch as a token of their esteem for him. Capt. Cain has b?en commandant for several years and while he requires the cadets to conform to the regulations of the echool he is always unbiased and impartial, having no pets or favorites. Dr. Gwaltney, in pre senting the watch, proved himself to be a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In his impromptu presentation speech he hit upon a vein of ex qaisite humor that greatly surpiis ed and delighted the audience. The Summer School. June the 25th has been definitely decided upon as the date for the opening of the summer school for the teachers of Edgefield county. The trustees should see to it that the teachers attend this school Much real good for the cause of education has been derived from these teachers institutes. The beli ef its that accrue are in proportion to the number of teachers who attend. If the teachers do not at tend voluntarily some compulsion will have to be brought to bear up on them. They should not be allow ed to stay away with impunity. Teachers of Edgefield, the county superintendent of education ie ex pecting a large attendance. Do not disappoint him.
