The com mittee after due consideration awarded the handsome gold medal to Joe Gordon Holland Joe is as cornel}- of face and powerful of form as David and could slay a modern Go liath without even putting the stone in a sling Every heart in the opera house on Wednesday evening 'T?st was filled with hosannas [ and hallelujahs of thankful ness when the announcmentj was made from Col. Bailey's own lips, ex cathedra, that the S, C. C. I. was perman ently located in Edgefield 'and that all rumors to the ef fect that the school would be moved to another place were absolutely without foundation. Long live the South Carolina Co-?ducational I n s t i tute. May it goon "conquering and to conauer." A recent commencement orator spoke quite apropos, in addressing the student body of a female colledge, when he said : "Before I would marry a man to reform, I would sooner wed an ape and wait for his development". If more women thought asthis speaker and would be more exacting of men there would not be so many men needing reforma tion A man would take hts own life, before he would marry a woman to reform her. The women are largely responsible for two standards of morals being applied to the sexes. The moral tone of a community, so far as t h e young men are concerned' is largely what the young ladies make it. Tolerating a lax code of morals, as applied to men, ?C_?O ?.d?n-underline sun,* developed to his purest and highest estate, is, after all, worthy the affection of a pure aj^jj?eb?e-womgn;^ho-^ci?i= pies a plane but little lower than the angels. Then if left to follow unrestrained the in clinations of his baser nature he must and does prove to be totally unworthy of this affec ti on. Young ladies when a young man, whose mind is becloud I ed and whose breath is pollut ed with whiskey, asks to be your escort or to call at your home* say no-a great big NO. Then if he is your friend and ^desires your companion ship he will give up intemper Ste habits. If he does not and thereby shows that he prefers riotous living to your good will and esteem you have gained rather than lost. Would that the yonng ladies of every community would do this. ? Good Ending. Well, well ! the Virginia con stitutional convention has at last completed its work ! The memory of a man can scarce ly recall the day on which it first assembled. For months and. months - almost years and years-this body has been ?n session. The old mother state, the model of states in I many respects, surely has or should have a model constitu ;tion. Doubtless Virginia's coffers were replete when the convention assembled but we dare say they were depleted when the day of adjournment arrived. The members of this cori vention have labored faithful ly to make their fundamen tal law as near perfection as was possible for the finite mind to make it. Avery ap propriate and commenable act was the last amendmentL "recognizing Almighty God! -and making acknowledgment! pf His bountiful mercy to all the people." The members of the convention may have dilly-dallied and shilly-shal lied all these months but they redeemed themselves by embodying the above stated amendment in their organic law.
