Work has commenced on the Three ] C's again somewhere between Blacks burg and Newberry, according to the Union correspondence of the Columbia j State, which see in another column. On Feb. 27th, at noon, Mr Wooten, a leading business man of Newberry, was married to Miss Sallie Jones, of Edgefleld county, at the residence of the bride's father, Mr W. W. Jones, of Laurens. ' The town will be greatly improved in appearance by. the plantingof shade trees on several of the principal thor oughfares. The thanks of the town are due the town council for thi??mo\e in the right direction. A four-room cottage is being erected adjoiuing Mrs Ashley in Buncombe for the residence of Mrs Merriman, of Johnston, who is desirous of making Edgefleld her home, and will remove here as soon as toe bouse is completed. Give tr ' ..ow shop a trial. Miss Mary Julia Boper has been spending sometime with Mrs Mayson and other relatives in Edgefield. Sh" is studying in the Augusta hospital to become a trained nurse. Miss Roper could not have chosen for a life work a nobler employment. She sets a worthy example to many young wo? men in Edgefield county who might thus becomes blessing to their coun try and to humanity. Mr Trapp McManus, Mr Wm. H. Arthur, and others, are doing a good work at the factory chapel. They have organized a Sun iay school which will meet therp ev?ry Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Monument Association held their meeting at the home of Mrs Kate Mims on last Friday afternoon. Tb? monument has been paid for with the exception of about one hundred dol lars, which has been subscribed, but n it yet collected. If these subscrip tions bold onod, which of courte they will, the monument will be free from all incumbranxes, and tbe people of Edgefield can view it with unalloyed pleasure. The grounds around the building of the South Carolina Co-Educational Institute will put on a very inviting appearance tatter in the season. Col Bailey, noe satisfied with "a garden of giris," has broken an eitablished rule, and will have something "green" up there this spring. Water oaks have been planted at harmonious distance* throughout the grounds, which will make beautiful shade trees in a few years. A mock orange hedge bas been planted inside the front fence. The bluegrass which has been sown on tbe lawn is rapidly comiug up, and will soon be a verdant carpet. The Aivertis^r and the Commoner W. J. Mr Tillman was in Edgefleld fourteen years ago, just after the earthquake of 1886. His good work among the people at that time will never be forgotten, aud he has been the means of do ing a great good this time also. Twenty-eight persons have become members of the church, quite a number have been reclaimed. Mr Tillman's sermon on Sunday even ing was a simple gospel presenta tion of truth, and hie song "I am going home to Jordan" brougat tears t? many eyes. He is in earn est iu his life work, and say* that I he will testify for his Saviour as long as there is breath io his body, j He has been sick nearly ever siucf he came to Edgefiald, and his fee-j ble frame gave doubled emphasis j to ali bis word?. Ou Friday evening last at about half past nine o'clock the spirit ot Mr Harry Hill left the earthly tabernacle and departed to a hap pier existence- in that bright lan i beyond, the glories of which cai; never be enjoyed by mortal man till he has conquered his last foe. and has been clothed in the gar ment of immortality. Monday, at noon, the last re mains of this beloved friend wer<: carried to the Baptist church, of which he was a member, to receive the parting tribute of his friends aud loved ones. A large number of relatives were present from dif ferent parts of the county, and the church was full of . sympathetic frieudd. Dr Gwaltney in his words of comfort and counsel to the family and friends, leferred to Mr Hill as "a man widely known in Edgefield county, and esteemed and beloved by all who knew him.'" He said that he bad not had man) friends in life so kind hearted and tender as Mr Hill had been. The students of the 3. C. C. I. were all present in a body to share in these obsequies over the dead. This was a sad occasion, and all the congregation wore touched with sincere sympathy for the ber roiav?d family. The ssiviceB wer?? coQcluded at the grav9 by the Kn;ghts of Honor, ot which order Mr Hill was a member. He leaves his wife, who was Misa Maggie Tompkins, and H ve children, Roger, Nellie, Jack, Walter, and Carl, and the last of his immediate family, his sister Miss Ina Hill. The latter, wb/1 lives at Clinton, was with him at the last, as was also his son*Roger, who has been in attendance at the Business College of Macon, Ga., but who reached home in time to? bid his father farewell. Mr Hill was a kind, generous friend and neighbor, and his af fection for his family was hit', marked characteristic. He was heard to say once, that he lived for the comfort and happiness of his children. May God in his provi dence so draw them all to himself and so shield them "under the shadow of his winga" that they will live worthy of their father, and hereafter meet him again at the gates of that beautiful city where "there is no sorrow nor cry ing, and where God himself shall wipe away all tears from their Byes." State sends the following interest ing news: Quite a little stir was created Wednesday morning when A man walked into the store of the A. H. Foster, company, at Union, and, jj pur chased some wheelbarrows. aud announced that be was going to renew work on wb.at. is known . as the Three C's railroad, running from ' Black?borg to Augusta. The party said he was from the < conetruction department of the I South Carolina and Georgia , Extension railroad, and that On tait Saturday he received a tele gram at Blackbburg telling him io immediately go to work on the old bed of the Three C's. He^said he did not know any thing further thw that he was ordered to go to work ou it. He now has two squads of men on it, one between here and. Blacksburg and the other just below Union. He further said that all that wee I probably wanted now was to get the tr.u;k ia id ?ud t he necessary ?inrj? could be then done with the construction trains. The old Three C's bed is graded to within about eight miles of Blacksburg and from Union to Whitmire's, and on to Newberry sud Augusta. After leaving New berry it is probably graded for a narrow gauge, but the party said , it was wide enough to take the regular crossties, and that jt couln be made wider after tho rails were laid. People al! along the line are in terested in this road, aud it is to be hoped that it will be finished now that it has been taken up. Guarded by four companies ofi state military to protest him from a mob, determined on lynching him, Albert Shenkle. who, on December 23d, last, criminally assaulted the 16-year-old daughter of Charles H. Giller, ol' Carrulitou. J was early today taken from the county jail at Springfield, placed on a special traiu and brought to Cairolltou. Through streets lined with silent spectators he was hurried to the court house. An hour after the arrival of the traiu, Shenkle pleaded guilty.
