DeVore, Esq., bas returned from Lexington where he went to get bail for Milled ge Williams, which he secured before Judge Benet iu the sum of $1500. Williams was from Saluda county and was charged with killing Will Whittle of the same county. The next regular meeting of our County Board of Commissioners will be held on the first Monday in March, and aa they expect to borrow money as heretofore,everybody will be happy made so with a check payable with only a 5 per cent, rebate or discount or knock-off. The national democratic-com mittee, having met in the city of Washington, on the 32nd day of February, 1900, has appointed Wednesday, the 4th day of July as the time, and chosen the city of Kansas City, Missouri, as the place for holding the national demo cratic convention. It is a sen timent usually possessed by all mankind, whether they be old or young, rich or poor, high or low. It seems to be innate, and exists from childhood to the grave. Take it away aud you dispense with all that is worth possessing. See, for | instance, a little girl in her child. ish rambles, innocently smiling on all who have a kind word for her or are inclined to listen to her innocent prattle. She lives in hope and glad is she when she arrives at sufficient age to accompany an older sister or brother to school where the good teacher looks and speaks kindly to her, and at the same time imparts useful knowl edge. i?|?& See her during her school girl days as ehe" toils over her books with the bright hope of winning the prize which is awarded to the head of the class. And also with the hope of becoming learned and accomplished. When her school dai'sara ended and her educa tion completed then she lives with the hope of becom ing great and good, and finally when the meridian of life is passed and old age comn on, she has a I hope that she will again live in a j bright and better world. The; poor man strives hard by day and meets his kind hearted wife at night cherishing the hope j that better days will come. The rich man. rushes heedlessly on through every diffiotilty with the hope that bis wealth - will still be greater. j?f i? He still fondly clings to the hope that he will one day regain his health. The fond lover, though he may have visited the fair young being whon he wished to be his bride time after time, and though ob stacles may be thrown continually in his path still hope, evor cheer ing, stimulates bim to action and | he pers?v?rer. The good wife who is so unfor tunate as to have joined her lot with one who is a slave to intem perance, continues to treat him kindly with tho hope of one day inducing him to quit his glass and become a gentle loving husband anet useful man. Parents entertain for their chi ! dren the hope that they may grow j up dutiful and intelligent, showing to the world the good of installing useful instruction into .youthful minds. And last, though not least, the Chi ist ian when he is at last on hie dying bed, gives up the things of this life cheerfully with a bright hope of eternal life in the world to come. Hence we see life from the cradle to the grave ie animated by this consoling faculty. If we are rich, enjoying the com forts of lifo, hope says go on, climb higher, be greater and bettor.
