So far as we can judge not more than
-half aa. much commercial fertilizers
baa been bought by the farmers this
season as last.
Mr. Chris. Williams announces this
week for-Treasurer. Chris, is a mighty
good mari, anil so is Col. Sam Ma>sa
mighty good man.
Since the first of January nearly
three millions of dollai s have been in
tested in cotton mills in South Caro
lina. We are still at it. *
At this writing cotton, middling, ls
bringing in Augusta 9?? cents, but
these figures are perilously near the
top, in the opinion of yours truly.
Friend Scurry, our chief of police, is
still down with.the mumps, but(we are
pleased to state that he is daily im
proving, and will soon be athis post
again.
The plate girts trust has also ker
fluniuxed; Joh ; Weirdidthat. Edge
fleld is always bound to have a place in
the picture near the flashing of the
guns.
Here is another mighty good man in
the person of Mr. Robert L. Du novan t
who announces this week for the posi
tion of High Sheriff of- Edgelield

The Edgefleld county Pension Board
met at this place on last Thursday,
bailing to conclude their labors the
board adjourned dil next Thursday,

Baptist' church on Sunday morning

ducting the funeral obsequies of Mis.
J. M. Jones at Batesburg.
Ourtown council, has just, received
another car ioad of terra cot ta piping
tor sewerage and drainage purposes.
It ranges in size from a ten inch diam
eter to aa big as a barrel. Augusta

Next week we hope tc present to our
readers a large list of names for the
vanou3 county offices; the moon will
then be on the increase, you know,and
candidates, like the balance of man
kind, are not without their su; ersti
tions.
The next meeting of the Edgefleld
and Ridge Teachers7 Association will
be held in Columbia on the'2nd an '.3rd
of' March. Among other features of
the occasion there will be an address
by Hon. John J. McMaban, State Su
perintendent of Education.
. J. W. DeVore, Esq., bas returned
from Lexington where he went to get
bail for Milled ge Williams, which he
secured before Judge Benet iu the sum
of $1500. Williams was from Saluda
county and was charged with killing
Will Whittle of the same county.
The next regular meeting of our
County Board of Commissioners will
be held on the first Monday in March,
and aa they expect to borrow money as
heretofore,everybody will be happy
made so with a check payable with
only a 5 per cent, rebate or discount or
knock-off.
The regular election for Mayor and
Wardens of our town will be held ou
Monday, Anril 8th prox. See notice in

tration. Remember, registration isa
necessary pre-reqnHite to voting; or

Kat. Mr. Owens, of Johnston, preach
ed the annual missionary sermon of
the Ladies' Missionary Society of Ed
gefleld in our Methodist church on
Sunday morning last. The congrega
tion was small owing no doubt to the
inclemency of the weather, but the col
lections were unusually good.
Trapp McManus says it is no use te
tell the people of Edgefleld county thai
it snowed ou Monday of this week, for
they bave eyes tc see and the sense to
know it. But perhaps they don't all
know th.it this -ittie snow is worth
more to the small grain than an appli

We heard an old gentleman say yes
terday : "I've been a resident of this
town from as far back as the memory
of man runneth, according to the three
score a? d ten' term alotted bim, and if
there ever was a spoonful of dirt or
sand shovelled on the sidewalk on the
south side of Main street in oar town,
by order of our town authorities, then
it was before my time. This is so, Mr.
Editor, and our worthy old P. M. will
bear me out in my assertion, in bis
well known and emphatic way if nec
essary. In dry weather our sidewalk
is .Al-but when it rains, we go home
in mud, and slush, and water, and our
folks think our religious professions
have become sadly impaired." And our

why Alderman Burnett and Chief
Scurry don't give the sidewalk on the

mittee, having met in the city of
Washington, on the 32nd day of
February, 1900, has appointed
Wednesday, the 4th day of July
as the time, and chosen the city of
Kansas City, Missouri, as the place
for holding the national demo
cratic convention. Each State is
entitled to a representation therein
equal to double the number of its|
senators and representatives in the
congress of the United States ; and j
each territory, Alaska, Indian Ter
ritory and the District of Colum
bia, shall have six delegates. All
democratic, conservative reform
citizens of the United States, irre
spective of past political associa
tions and differences, who can
unite with us in the effort for pure,
economical and constitutional gov
ernment and who favor the repub
lic and oppose the empire are cor
dially invited to join us in send
ing delegates to the convention.

It is composed of only four letters,
yet it expresses much. It is a sen
timent usually possessed by all
mankind, whether they be old or
young, rich or poor, high or low. It
seems to be innate, and exists
from childhood to the grave. Take
it away aud you dispense with all
that is worth possessing. See, for |
instance, a little girl in her child.
ish rambles, innocently smiling
on all who have a kind word for
her or are inclined to listen to her
innocent prattle. She lives in hope
and glad is she when she arrives at
sufficient age to accompany an
older sister or brother to school
where the good teacher looks and
speaks kindly to her, and at the
same time imparts useful knowl

See her during her school girl
days as ehe" toils over her books
with the bright hope of winning
the prize which is awarded to the
head of the class. And also with
the hope of becoming learned and
accomplished. When her school
dai'sara ended and her educa
tion completed then she
lives with the hope of becom
ing great and good, and finally
when the meridian of life is passed
and old age comn on, she has a I
hope that she will again live in a j
bright and better world.

day and meets his kind hearted

tunate as to have joined her lot
with one who is a slave to intem
perance, continues to treat him
kindly with tho hope of one day
inducing him to quit his glass and
become a gentle loving husband

up dutiful and intelligent, showing
to the world the good of installing
useful instruction into .youthful
minds.
And last, though not least, the

hope of eternal life in the world

Hence we see life from the
cradle to the grave ie animated
by this consoling faculty.
If we are rich, enjoying the com
forts of lifo, hope says go on, climb
higher, be greater and bettor. On
