Tiffi WONDERFUL ESCAPE I Of a Negro after Being Hanged and Shot. NORE OLK, Va., July 17.-The most remarkable case of attempted lynching took place at Beamon's Station on Saturday night last Within the past twelve months Mr. Cartwright, who lives near Beam on Station, on the Atlantic & Danville railroad, has had twelve horses killed by poison. About three weeks ago his house was burned to the ground in the night. Suspicion rested upon a negro j named Isaac Jenkins, who has had some trouble in that neighbor (hood, and who was tried for ! breaking into the houso of D. B. j Mackey some time ago, but not convicted. He returned to the neighborhood on Saturday, was arrested, and whiid being taken to jail by a constabled was captured by a party of twenty-five. men, who hanged him to a tree and shot him and lift him for dead. After the lynchers departed he took his knife from his pocket cut himself down and made his escape. As soon as it became known that the lynchers had failed there was a mad crowd and the woods were scoured, but the man could not be fouud. He I arrived here to-day and was given I medical attention. He has two bullet holes in his neck, his scalp is cut in several places and the marks of tne rope are upon his neck. Handcuffs were upon him and were cut off at the police station.
