Tiffi WONDERFUL ESCAPE
I Of a Negro after Being Hanged
and Shot.
NORE OLK, Va., July 17.-The
most remarkable case of attempted
lynching took place at Beamon's
Station on Saturday night last
Within the past twelve months
Mr. Cartwright, who lives near
Beam on Station, on the Atlantic &
Danville railroad, has had twelve
horses killed by poison. About
three weeks ago his house was
burned to the ground in the night.
Suspicion rested upon a negro
j named Isaac Jenkins, who has
had some trouble in that neighbor
(hood, and who was tried for
! breaking into the houso of D. B.
j Mackey some time ago, but not
convicted. He returned to the
neighborhood on Saturday, was
arrested, and whiid being taken to
jail by a constabled was captured
by a party of twenty-five. men,
who hanged him to a tree and shot
him and lift him for dead.
After the lynchers departed he
took his knife from his pocket
cut himself down and made his
escape. As soon as it became
known that the lynchers had
failed there was a mad crowd and
the woods were scoured, but the
man could not be fouud. He
I arrived here to-day and was given
I medical attention.
He has two bullet holes in his
neck, his scalp is cut in several
places and the marks of tne rope
are upon his neck. Handcuffs
were upon him and were cut off at
the police station. He walked
twenty miles to-day and is doing
I well, and-will doubtless recover.

Honorable discharged soldiers and sailors* .'ho'served nineiy days,

br ordinary manual labor, whether disability was caused by service
>r not, and regardless of their pecuniary circumstances.
Widows of such soldiers and sailors are entitled (if not remarried)
whether soldier's death was due to service or not, if now dependent
ipon their own labor for support. Widows not dependent upon their
>wn labor are entitled if the soldier's death was due to service.
Children are entitled (if under sixteen in almost all cases where
here was no widow, or she has since died or remarried. ,
Parents are entitled if soldier left neither widow nor child,nrovided
oldier died in service, or from eff?cts of service, and they are now d?
tendent upon their own labor for support. It makes no difference
whether soldier served or died in late war or in regular army or navy.
Soldiers of the late war, pensioned under one law, may apply for
kigher rates under other laws, without losing any rights.
Thousands of soldiers drawing from $2 to $10 per month under
he old law, are entitled to higher rates under new law, not only on
ccount of disabilities for which now pensioned, but also others,.

Soldiers and sailors disabled in time of duty in regular army or

Survivors, and their widows, of the Black Hawk Creek, Cherokee,
