Dr. Chase.- T. The duties of Dr. Jackson will include an anal. vsis of the cotton ash, niih a view of de termining the amount of mineral matter ex tracted'from 'thesoil by the plant. It is thought that the cotton of the sea islands owes itssperior-quality to the absorption of soda froim the saline soil or afnosphere, or from both, and this analysis of tbe ash is to determine the question as to quality let ween this description of cotton and that of the interior--whether the preponderance of so da or potasih is the cause of the' diffnrence. An analysis.of th - wo..soil&: will also be made with a view oit t ihlishing the tact. Dr. J. will also experiment to. ascertain the best means of dendorsing the sewerage and foetal matter of cities and large towna, and converting them into fertillizws. This com mission is one of the most inmportant prosjee tionsof this active and useful Bureau, and from, the .vell known reputation of tha gi.e. tlenian emnployed, an intereting. full and sat-. isfacto' repjort may be !opked 1fr. The most commot: fault in matching hor ses is this:-The first thing that is looked after is a match of color. Tis shonl be the last requisite. Thae poinit of imnpoimiace, atid wvithzou which you never can have a matched team, is that they travel alike, and this includes gait, speed, and aion. If one is a square trotter, the other muast not shuffi or rack. , If otne goes high and clear, the other~iiust iot. have a ioip swing. if oiie lets out with long reaches, the oate must not mince, elle they are not onhy a-:e but each damages the others gait without helping his own.- The next point is cousti tatioigor ital foice and endurance; and withai~s, must be reckoned age, temper, and intelligence, and wh'tatever goes to mtake up the-moral character of the animals. Thsese poits,of course will :affect and govern the eep~lence and unity of the firat, but are subordinate in this, thsat vital force can mnake amends for the absence of action, anud no amiableness of temper can compensate the~ lack of locomotion, sitnce horses are esteem ed for what they can do, rather than fors what they know. The thud point is size; and with this must be reckoned style an d1 build. In fact, style. runs thro' all the point.. lbnt more especially -in carriasge.
