At Havre, cotton was in good demand at fir mer rates, owing to the increased confidence felt in France and throughout Europe in regard to the speedy establishument of peace.. Bre:dstuffs from the same cause, were declining. It was doubtful whether Frussia would be ad mittod to the ".nference. '1he decision of Russia hnd(eaused the greatest est astonishment in Turkey. A deep laid military conspiracy had -been de tected in Spain, but the particulars had not transipired. GEN. PIErCE.-TIn the Diary and Correspon dence of The late Amos Lawrence, of Bfoston, is the subjoined remark in relation to General Pierce. It will be remembered that Mr. Law. rence was a presidential elector, and cast his vote for General Scott; but in a letter to a friend in South Carolina in 1852. he said; " My nephew by marriage, Franklin Pierce, seems to be a prominent candidate for the Whife House for the next four years. He is the soul of hon or, and ai old fashioned Deuiocrat born and bred, and can be depended on as such." NorA NEGRo GoviG.-Tcn thousand white Inen are giving their rnoney or going to Kansas for the "cause of freedom" for the negroes, and so little do the negroes care for what' these white folks are doing for them,,that not one out of the 50,000 in the other Northern States has volunteered to go and fight nor to give one cent to make Kansas a free State! What a comment bn the negro'o estimation of "freedom!" The truth is, there is not one among the 900,000 who cares a straw whether Kansas is a free State or not.-New York Day Book. Mr. John Lawrence Bazier, of Kentucky, of fers to bet from five thousand to thirty thousand Aollars, that he can achieve the following feats; Jump jive feet further on a dead level than any esau in Kentneky ; three feet further than any man in the United States; one foot further than any man in the world ; or that lie can stand flat-footed upon the earth, and leap a brick wall fifteen feet high and four feet thick." SEraous DIFFICULTY.-Last nIght a difficulty occurred between a student of the College and one of the City Marshals, in which the'fomer was struck down and carried to the guard house. lie was resctied by the students in a body, who entered the guard house and bore him off. The marshal was severely beaten, and several of the students hurt, though we believe not dan gerously.--Caroliian of the 18th inustant. GEN. HoUSToN GOING TO RESIGN.-A letter nppears in the Cincinnati Cminmerciel, dated Covington, Januuary 2Gth, and signed J. C. Por ter, in which the writer states that he was pres ent at a conversation between JTudgte Perrin and General Hotustotn, during wvhiich the General ds tinctly said that the Legislature of Texas had ;passed a resolution instructing him to resign, -and that. he intended to obey instructions. The deceased was a very worthy young man, aged near 27 years, anud has left a large circle of friends in this district to mourn his untimely end.-Chester Standard.
