Townsend has appointed Samuel Smart, Sr. Robert Livingston, Jr., and William Boyd on the Board of Equalization for this county. These appointments went into effect on the first c>l this month, and will continue in force for five years unless sooner revoked. These three citizen taxpayers, together with t lie County Auditor and Treasurer, compose the Equalization Bo.ir.l As the hoard is now com nosed, each section of the county is as fairly repiCHontod as could possibly be done in making the appointments, and we think there is not a man on the board but will do his duty faithfully, fearlessly and honestly. Tiik Tax ok this County.?As a matter of information to the people ol this e.onnty, we publish the following statement of the taxes collected in the | county for the present fiscal year: State tax $10,181.72 (Ionnty tax.... $ 1,01 .s,<l I ) Bridge tax .... 2,000.'JO \ Total county tax $0,712.40 School lax $0,1 10.80 ) Poll tax 1,028 00 j Total school tax not paid into State Treasury, 1,77 1.80 $2 7,00.7.05 Prw.io Schools.?So lar as hoard from the annual district school meetings throughout the county, no additional tax has been assessed to aid in the support and maintenance of the public schools. The meetings were generally hugely attended by the taxpayers, especially so was this the case in this township. It is not that the people are opposed to education that no aid has hcen voted the tree schools, but the taxpayers did not feel that they could do more than struggle through with the taxes now imposed upon them by the Logi islaturc. In this township they remembered that last year they generously voted a school tax of five mills on the dollar, ami-yet the hand of the Legislature was not lightened from their shoulders. In the last tax the two mills collected in this county and paid into the Slate Treasury for school purposes was #2,690 90, arq| yet but #1,400 ol this amount was apportioned back to the county. To this may be added tbe fact that the taxpayer has come to look upon it that the bulk of the school funds baddied and used in the county, is almost or quite as direct a loss to the people as that paid into the State Treasuay. This aiises lrom the employing ot a Iftl'cm number r?f tiniclioro ov? O" vv.?v?v,?j ",,v wholly incompetent. Until this evil can he remedied, or sonic more practical plan adopted for the efHcicnt education of the children, public schools in this county will con. tinuo to be a nuisance to all, except a lew who plant not, neither do they toil or spin, but depend on a little three moths school lor their support. ? ?
