' THE BASE BALL EXCURSION. i On Monday night the Cosmopolitan | Base Ball club left Beaufort fur Charles- . ton, on the 11:30 tiain. They were accompanied by about a score of friends. ( Their misfortuues began at the Beaufort s Ftation, where they were detained half an ( hour for the down train to pass. About I midnight the train got in motion, [t j did not take long to convince the most ] hopeful that the fates were against them, j Fifteen cars of phosphates was too much c of a load for the engine, which was some- t What out of order. The jaded party reached Yemassee i about two hpurs after the Charleston j traih had Jeft. From that hour thirty- J three mad fellows stalked about the de* pot ill various stages of insanity. Enough t profane language wus euitted to blast all s the vegetatiou for miles around. The t lazy aligators stirred in their slimy bed, 1 the trefe frogs ceased their noise in aston- t ishment, the screech owls fled in dismay, 1 as the fearful din of denunciation rolled 1 echoing through the moanjng pines. The engine refused to whistle as it moved off) 1 while the conductor pillowed his head tipon bags of fragrant fertilizer, as the train passed by the platfoiru full of irate base bailers. c Morning dawned upon as demoralized ( a crew as ever assembled in that region a since "de gun shoot"' at Hilton Head, j When Giveus came he thought " he J should have melted." His "eyes were pink}*." " Mr. Cashier Lock wood, was informed by telegraph that the locomotive could 1 tint "draw'' because it had not given "sixty days notice." The telegraph lines between Yamassce and Beaufort early gave signs of some ^ disturbance. ''Old Prob,*' was notified 1 that a storm impended over this region. The office at Beaufort was so full of ' curses, blue lightning and the smell of Ycuinsscc whisky that the lady operator j had to retire. By the aid of camphor, colonge, smelling salts, and other disinfectants, she was subsequently enabled 1 to attend ft the business of the day. I After many discussions as to the cause i of the delay, Mr. S. I). Gilbert discov* f ered th.it Kiutrtnan had stamped the s tickets:?''Good to return ten days from J dare; September29, 1S74." Ofeoursc t they at once gave up all hope, and began i writing their w ills. \ Bovcc said if he had the snperinte dant there he would "put him out on three s'rikes."' Brodie thought the club could make ( thirty "home runs" before tlic game began. Clancy then suggested that U.cie were j too many in the 'holt field. An indignation mooring was organized [ . . . J t.i..,.f Iin tiiu eiiatr. i The speeches were thort, sharp and tic- ' l-isive. Resolutions were adopted unanimously K\tu'y blaming tlio supcritr } tendent of the road for his neglect and t lack of interest in the excursio , ironically thanking him for the pleasures of a night spent at Ycniassee, and warmly c commending Conductor Smith and the 1 authorities of the Savannah <!t Charles- c ton road for favors received. At half-past two o'clock the club arrived in Charleston where they were met by the Caroliuas and escorted to the Pa- ! vilion hotel. In consequeucc of the rain 1 and the lateness of the hour the match was postponed until Wednesday. In the evening the Cosmos were entertained at the Vigilaut Fire company's hall, where a handsome collation was provided by ' 1 the Caroliuas. On Wednesday the game was called at 1 o'clock. We are without particulars of the play which resulted in a defeat of 11 the Cosmos by a score of 21 to 14. An Inquest. On Tuesday night the wife of Mr. A, Mark, who had been ill of consumption for a longtime past, was found dead by the side of her bed. No one was with her when she died, her husband being in Charleston. At the request of neighbors au inquest was held by deputy coroner ; I>r. J. A. Johnson. The evidence showed that the woman had been visited mi hour or two before her death by Dr. j Jones, who administered an emetic; he j testified that she was suffering from a 1 long continued suppression of the menses. Dr. Stuart te-tided that the woiuau when lie last saw her was in the last 6tages of consumption, and the suppression of her periods was a secondary cause of her sickness. Jones exhibited a diploma from the : notorious fraudulent "American I'niver- i sity of Philadelphia," upon which he rests his claim to he considered u doctor. : i The verdict was "death from natural causes.'1 All Abandoned Vessel. j 1 . On Sunday last, about 0 o'clock, a. j nr., the fnlot boat Keystone, sighted a | vessel when seventeen miles due cast of Martin's Industry lightship, which j>roved to he the brig ^Valthain, of Now York. Upon hoarding her she was found j waterlogged and abandoned. The brig : t was hove to by the lea; foresail, lower topsail and jih set; port anchor and . chain gone; port side of stern ami the < cabin after bulkhead stove in, the water , completely gutting the cabin: four planks torn off the port quarter; starboard main topmast backstay cut partly through with { an axe; starboard forerigging and backstays adrift, the lanyards being cut away; ' firetopmast staysail and gaff topsail j blown to pieces; mainsail cut with a,t knife ; hatches all open and cargo adrift; ' i masts and spars standing; boats and da its gone; her hull appeared to be sound. ^ On her deck was a well constructed life raft, made by her crew after their aoats were destroyed. A bucket of dough ivas found lashed in the main rigging, ['our life lines were found in the staii>oard rigging, to which doubtless the ;rew had been lashed when taken off. " Upon the after quarter of her cabiu '); ivas pencilled "33 deg. 18 min. lat. ; '8 deg. 15 uiin., long.which may have jecn the position of the vessel when Zl ibanduncd. ac It is the opinion of the pilots that her :rew was taken off by souie passing ves- -l ielf during very heavy weather, as no at- m euipt was made to strip her or save any- lo hing. at The Walthani was spoken by Pilot cc fiarly on Sopt. 2, when on her way to w Brunswick, which place she cleared from tl >n the 18th imt., with 10,000 cypress w tnd hard pine railroad ties. di Tim Kovstone had on board the follow- hi ng : Jas. Early, master; Gordon Young tl >ilot; John T. Murray, pilot; Charles )a Stevens boat keeper ; and a boy. ai Capt. Early first boarded the Wal- b; ham, and took charge, and the tedious in md doubtful task of bringing the vessel bi o port was begun. At midnight she v< lad a narrow escape from the north th )reaker. On Tuesday she was safely ui >rought into the bay and anchored of sc Jattery creek. cl The vessel will be brought up and ti reached near town. c< Marsh Lands For Sale. c3 Whose cat is in this meal tub? The weather and other things hav ?cn considerably varied here during tli ist week ; souie days have beeu all tha :art could desire; others sloppy am ooiuy enough. The faces of the citi ins have appeared to smile, or frown i icordunce with the change. Ju.-t at present, the most absorbin ibj?tt, is the study af finance. Stat alters and politics are very generall st sight of, and business men especiallj e watching with intense interest, th lursc and effect of the great financit hirlwiud that commenced last week i lat slough, Wall street, and has bee mding its way soutn, leaving wrct-K an saster in its track. Oue can hear a! iuds of reports upon the streets, (an ley grow rapidly as th' y travel) calcu ted to have a bad effect upon business id the utmost care has been cxerciset f the leading bankers to allay all feel gs of insecurity. Up to this time th inks arc as sound as ever, and there i ;ry littlo danger of the savings institu ons being troubled. If a run should b ade upon them they will avail tlicin lives of the legal notice allowed by tliei lartere. Cotton has taken a sma luible, having dropped from 17 to 15 ;rrts, but it is being moved with but lil e difficult}'. The unparalleled stringer r of money all during the season, ha indered it a difficult task for the bank 1 meet .this demand, and at the sam me carry the large amount of our rnei lant's paper; and, for this, wkatevc iuy happen, the bankers and brokers c lis city deserves much credit. It is now very generally uudcrstooc lat {lie legislature will convene inextr ission on the 128th of October; howev *, it is an uncertain matter, and canuc 2 definitely judged of at this time, n le "heads" arc of the opinion no tliirt jys notice pf calling it together will 1 squired. There have been a large nun ?r of (lie members in the city durin ic week, all of wh'un have visited tli ate house frequently, and then quictl isappeared. This evening several scuf ?rs arrived, as also, Licut-Govcrni Heaves. Jt would not seem possum owever, that the governor and hi iends would at this time make an lank movement upon the small miuorit at in tavor of the extra session. Already there has commcuced to be ue and cry concur in? the next ta vv, which it is scmi-oflieially stated wi i at the rate of twenty mills. IIo' nich of this will go towards paying th iin of $'.140, which will he due as iritei >t on these "five bonds" the saprcm >nrt. had under cousideratioii is nr atcd. At any rate the prospects of th lymuut of interest arc not such as t eate any large amount of con ft lorn ere, for, this week twenty thousand do rs of bonus were sold by the comptro! {' general at pnb'ic vend.ic, at 1 ! ] ceiil i the dollar. Tliese bonds were depos cd in accordance with the law hy th tides insurance company which is ii ilvent; tltay consisted of eighteen on lousand do lar conversion bonds, an inr five hundred dollar bonds issued to ic redemption of the bills of the baukf le state. For the close proximity of a time of ission of the legislature, affairs aboi: ic state house arc more quiet than on ould think they would be; some thin lis is ominous and that n storm is brev ig. There is no small amount of con lunication between some of the ol ring-workers" and New York. It i jt very probable that Mr. Kimptonwi ; present on the field of action this wii r.
