Mr. Hodges, like nearly all ih< men who go abroad and rely upon their re sources, has risen to a position of uselulnesa He is now manager of the Pacific and South era Express Company at Monroe. He Is i grandson of that good and honored old man Gen. G. "W. Hodges, of Cokesbury. The New Post Office. The post office man from Washington wai in Abbeville last Monday, and left on y ester day. He Is a kindly old gentleman, anc hooked at all of our lolB.ehbwibg Interest lr some. He gave very little Information as t( his preference or choice of lots. A whole loi of our lot owners are Bitting uncomfortably on the bdxIous bench. He thought the sla per eent grade of the Alston lot was prohibitive and be didn't seem to be oompletel; carried away with the Miller hotel lot. The , Cannon lot, the Gambrell, the Rosenberg int. Betmed Dosslbilltles, and other lots were not pronounced against. The inspectoi seemed to have a mind of bis own. He beard us all talk' and gave respectful attention to all. If be whispered hopes to any we do not know the fact. Whiskey baB recently knocked some mighty good men out of their Jobs. Better teaoh nursing mothers not to touch intoxicants of any kind. When a mother feeds her child diluted intoxicants with a spoon, the child ought to be taken away instantly from ber care. She Is unfitted to bring up a child, except for a drunkards grave. The Press and Banner would have been glad to bave seen an effort on the part of the Governor to have passed a law requiring the consumption contaminated cells in the penitentiary fumigated and more healthy. At present It seems tbat the penitentiary is a breeding pen for consumption germe, and whena poor fellow is fully impregnated with them, be is turned out to go home and further spread the disease. If any man knows of a more efficient way of spreading consump tion than is now practiced at Columbia we would be glad to hear of it. Mr. Williamson, who has been manager of the ice plant and laundry business at Abbeville bas given up bis Job and gone on the road to sell ice plant machinery. His pay on the road is double the pay which he has been receiving. He leaves bis family in Abbeville in the house of the late W. T Bradley. Has Florence County the courage to punlbh the men who bo crnelly abused and killed a negro? It does seem tbat .if the State protects ibe birds for a season in every year, tbe negroes ought to .be exempt from wanton murder for at least a short period in every . year. The Courts, up to tbis time, have not nullified tbe verdict tin Reelfolt lake murders. We presume however, that somebody may be looking for technicalities upon which tbe gallows may be cheated, wnen juages enforce tbe law, and when Povemore refuse to pardon convicts, we will bear less of complaints aooot perjured Juries. Tbe Legislature ought to pass a law giving convicts a liberal allowance In time ol service for good bebavlor. Such a course would bave a good moral effect upon tbe prisoner, wltb resultant good to tbe country. In bragging about Mr. W. C. Sberrard of tbls town beating tbe Anderson prize winner at raising pork, we did Mr. Sherrard an ltJustice. One of his porkers netted 500 pounds Instead of 300 lbs. aB stated. He made 600 lbs. Tbe ;Press and Banner would be glad to know wby Senators and Representatives should be exempted froto the attention of the secret service sleuths. It looks to us like somebody didn't want an Investigation into theiractlnes abd dolnee. If everything is rlgbt, the sleuths would vindicate. The Legislature being In session, gentlemen from the larms, from tbe shops, from the law and order league, from tbe dispensary, from tbe thirsty brethren whose well springs have gone dry can now instruct the Geueral Assembly what they want. The pious and "unco Rude" brother of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian at Due West, in the paragraph which follows, seems to make a greater exhibition of his hatred for Abbeville than he exhibits of christian char. lty or manly valor. That paper, seemingly forgetting Its past record on the whiskey question, said last week: "The recetptB of the Abbeville dispensary , for the month of December were S21,008.80. In four months the sales amounted.to more than i 860,000.. That Is considerably more than the dispensary used to sell In six months. The dispensary Is one of the most prosperous things In the county, It 1b one of the big enterprises of the town of Abbtevlile. When one conoern sells more than 821,000 worth of , liquor In a month It Is strictly in the liquor business. If thlDgs contlnne as they are this county noted for the men It has pooduced, for the history It has made, and for the refinement of its people will be known far and - wide for its whiskey business. And it looks as If it is to be continued for the men In charge ot tbe dispensary advertise that they ! have bought 574 barrels of liquor and 800 of - beer aDd 850 cases of liquors. From lbe earliest history of reoorded time lntoxloatlng liquors have been a great enemy to the human race, and to intoxicants are attributed nearly all the pitfalls Into which some of the best and many of the worthiest of the human family have gona i down. 1 Deliverance from the evils and the dangers b of Intemperance has excited the prayers and s the heart throbs of the purest and best men e tbat ever lived in any age. And it has even 1 given to men who may hove reaohed the 1 highest and holiest plaoes on earth, the van* lage ground from whloh they may emit the i odor that is, if possible, more ruinous than b the effect of intoxicants. " Our Saviour furnished examples of tenderness and meroy for the erring, and the erring have given to the hand and heart of those who pretend to be purer and better than their neighbors, the finest chanoe to exhibit that unchristian Bplrit which our Saviour condemned in the most Bevere language known ! to men. He yas pitiful to the erring but he 1 was severe on those who said their prayers on the street corpers and who olalmed to be purer and better than their neighbors. One unfairness of the Presbyterian is Been In the fact that it speaks of the "Abbeville'' dispensary, as if it was not tbe Abbeville oounty dispensary. ^ His manner of speeoh Is such as to create tbe impression that the town of Abbeville alone Is responsible for tbe dispensary. It is fair to presume that tbe editor of tbe Presbyterian has intelligence enough to know that any citizen of Abbevillecounty Is as much responsible for the existence of the dlspensaay aB Is any citizen of the town of Abbeville. Tbe reader is as able to assign a reason (or the implied misrepresentation. or the Insinuation of the Presbyterian, as I am. Let U8 look back at the record of the Prea" byterian on the subject of tbo liquor business. 1. For ten or twelve years no protest was made by the Presbyterian at sharing in tbe profits of the liquor trafllc for tbe benefit of the public school at Due West. 3. As far as I now recall the Presbyterian was! as Bllent as the grave on tbe BUbJectof running the Bohools in that town, partly on liquor money, until tbe schools of that town, like the schools in other seotlons, were deprived of the liquor money for a year. ' 8. During that year when the profits on the liquor business were cut ofi from tbe schools of Due West and elsewhere, tbe editor of the Presbyterian was suddenly overcome by a virtuous spasm. Wben his school no longer profited by It, he became convinoed that tbe liquor business was an exceedingly bad one. And when tbe sohool in bis town no longer profited by tbe sale of liquor, be would close the county dispensary which la located at Abbeville, and be .would now charge tbe aln of the whole whole business upon the town and the people of tbe city of Abbeville. If the Presbyterian ever whimpered against the Illicit distillery at or near to Due West tbe fact has escaped my notice. 4. When Due West was reoelvlng part of tbe liquor profits, the Preas and Banner, not because Due West was sharing In tbe profits, but from prlnolple, urged the keeping of tbe dispensary shut until a later hour In the forenooh, and tbe oloslng of tbe same waa urged for an earlier hour In tbe afternoon so that that Institution would be open for fewer hours;in tbe day. Not one word of assistance or encouragement did tbe Presbyterian give. One year when the dispensary was closed In the Snmmer time at six o'clock no word of approval came from the Presbyterian. The profits were then going to the Due West aohool. Bee? 5. As a further evidence of his conscientious scruples about maintaining, or keeping open, the county dispensary at Abbeville, we find tbe editor's name three times on the petition for ordering an election to vote out the dispensary. We have no intimation aa to how many times he Intended to vole at tbe proposed election. Tbe signing of tbe petition three times may be taken as some evidence that tbe editor was either very much In earnest, or else that be may have thought because of carelessness on tbe part of the Supervisor, tbe attempted imposition would not be discovered. 6. Tbe editor of the Presbyterian did not algn tbe petition to the Legislature for authority to build the new court houBe. Hun* dreils of the best and the most patriotic men in the county Joined in that request He, or others, did solicit private subscriptions of our people to tbe Carnegie ball, which was to be built in Due West. Tbe minutes of Synod inform us that after the completion of the Carnegie ball the Carnegie building was mortgaged to secure money to buy pianos and other things. 7. The temperance editor of tbe Presbyterian Is a trustee of tbe Female College andV Is presumed to have lent his aid and countenance to tbe unlawful aot of bad laitb. Tbe editor of the Presbyterian is also a member of the Board of Foreign Missions, and it is also lair to presume that he participated or acquieiced in tbe spending of churob money to build a house on land to which his brotherIn-law held tbe titles Where is the man In Abbeville who has performed, or who has attempted to perform any Bucb act as either? Has any man who has done either of these things the right to throw stones at anybody for anything? 8. As further proof that the pious editor la moved more by enmity to Abbeville than by virtuous motives, the warfare against the dispensary was made, not before, but after the walls of the old Court house were belni destroyed. 9. Iu the editor's Implied claim of per social superiority while Insinuating tha Abbeville alone was responsible for the dls pensary may discerned, behind the thlnnes veil, the hideousness of the misstatement, o insinuation. 10. Does the editor of the Presbyterlai contend that the people of Due West ar better than the people of Abbeville? By wha right oould he set up any suoh olalm? Are the preachers at Abbeville not as goo< as the preachers at Due West? Are the teachers at Abbeville not as goa and as true as the teachers at Dae West? Are not the business men at Abbeville li point of character and high standing, th equals In every respect, of the business mei at Dne Wesi? Are not the citizens of Abbeville as good t the citizens of Dae West? When proper allowance la made for tb church and the charitable funds that are dli irlbuted In Dae West, and after due and proj er discount Is made for fands raised by th whole church to support part of the km of tb editor and part of the Kin of other gentlemei in distant lands, Abbeville ha* nothing t fear In an honest, square and Just show dow: with Dae West or any other town. Soon after tbe destruction of the Erskln College building a good many years ago oommltlee of gentlemen from Due West cam here to see our people. They didn't go aroun secretly to plaoes in tbe back lota as if the were conscious of intending to do an unklnc ness to somebody, but they came to see thoi who were in tbe forefront?openly and abo\ board. A meeting was called in the Com bouse. All was kindness and every ma faoed every other man with an eye single f< the benefit and pleasure of tbe guesis. I like manner, If friends had oome here t consult about doing away with tbe dlspei sary, they would have found, and coald sti find, plenty of sympathisers, wbo are at leai Just as good, Just as honest, and Just as pui In obaraoter as any man who would make li slnuatlons, or wbo would make obarg< against an unoffending people. If tbe people of Abbeville \ bad bM oonsalted, instead of being insulted, It possible that the dispensary might bai been by this time a thing of the past. If the oburch paper at Dae West was the unfriendly to either Abbeville or to Its oil tens, the fact was not Indelibly Impresse upon my mind.
