Chattanooga, Tenn., Mjir. 5,190S. My dear Mr. Wlison: Every week I have intended writing yon to thauk you for the paper and to Bay hew mueb I appreciate It and look forward to It* coming. Only those who are away from home know how dear the Press and Banner Is. Every adveitlsement even, Is Interesting All my friends have been ko good to me, and each mall brings me a letter, post card or * ? *u"~ T# lo In/inorl o nloQLIl m In I pupt'r iruui buciu. XL in iuuv.u .. f know that our friends think of us The time has slipped by ?o quickly since 1 came to Chattanooga that I chu scarcely real ize that I have been here nearly three months. After leaving home 1 went to Kentucky ano stayed a while with my sister. I bad aiways wanted to be In Kentucky in the winter aud I oertalnly enjoyed tn.v stny there. It Is pretty cold out there. but I dou't oeileve you feel the coid like we do at home. Kentucky Is a beautiful state and especially In ihe blue grass section. ItEeemcto me lo>, that tbej have more to eat out there than they do Ik most places. One day, In November, we were invited onl to spend the day and there were nine vegetables served, besides other things. MoH people think that In November Kentucky is "frozen up" and everything has gone into winter quarters. Nearly every farm has Its own Ice-house and thH Is fl:ied during the first hard freeze. You dou't have to depend on the Ice man 01 be "saving" with ice. The Kentuckihts believe In living at homo, they r;.ise everything enough for home use and to sell. After my visit to Keutucky I came to Chattanooga aijd entered the Chattauooga Business College to take a course in short-I hand and typewriting. -Mr, Hawkins, who Is in charge of th's school, is assisted by his wife and tw-i other ladles. They have a large school and are v?ry thorouga in their work. Mr. and M s. Hawkins are charming and are attentive to their pupiln. It seems to me that they have been nicer to me than they have to any one. Chattanooga Isn't nearly bo large as I thought, it seems little more than an over grown country town. They have very few handsome buildings and the residences are very ordlnary. The James building, a twelve story building just competed. Is the Idol of the town and the Palt< n Hotel, a'moM competed, Is another Joy. The Patten Hotel is after the order of the Piedmont In Atlanta and gives promise to be quite an attracilve building. I don't think tho' that they are having ltaoy too soon for the otber hotels are anything but attractive. They have a Carnegie Library here and ground has been broken for a Dew Y. M. C. A. building that Is to be quite a handsome bulldiDg. Since Atlanta and other towns have gone "dry" Chattanooga ha9 become the dumping ground for all the whiskey men from every quarter. I've seen so many drunken men since I've been heie, and almost every other place on Market S'.reet is a saloon. There Is a movement on foot now to put whiskey out of Chattanooga. All the pastors, ladies and business men arc working hard for this end. A meeting has been conducted In Centemary Methodist church since Feb. 6;h and a great work Is being done. The pastor, Dr. JBaylor, in conducting tne meeting wun ine assistance of laymen. My room Is only a block from tbe churcb, so I can attend when ever I want to. I have gone there real olten during my stay here lor I like to go to church oDceaday anyway, and when It rained I didn't like to go around to the Presbyterian church which Is ever so many blocks away, i One alternoon several we* ks ago I went out I to CblcartlaugH Park. It was a lovely a/terDoon and I Marled for a walk. I had only goneaboui a hundred yards wh?n I looked up and saw Andrew White coming. He had his kodac and was taking some of the vltW* In tbe Camp. I turned baofc and walked with blm to tbe station; then, when his oar came, I teck.a carriage and went for a six mil's drive through the Park. I found that tbe Park contained only 7000 acres and that If I wanted to see anything at all I would havetodrlve. Some of the monuments are beautiful, fspedally the Georgia monument. South; Carolines Ik on a very blgb hill, but is too far from the drive to be seen very well. I saw by the paper that ever so many from home went over to Atlanta In January to see "Ben Hur," I went to see it here and It was decidedly the most beautiful plav I have ever seen. It Is really wonderful bow real these plajs can be mid*. I have ?een quite a good many plays this winter. I only care far tbe good play. I wouldn't g> to the others even If I felt I could atrord li. 1 saw by the Times this morning that Mr. Gary had ueen elected to succeed Senator Latimer. 1 am glad an Abhevllle man has been chosen and that Mr. Gtry was the for lunate one. i am surenewui reneci creuu on the position. I nave been watching the papers to see the outcome. When I started this tt was to be only a note by a woman's failing Is to pay too much. I hope, howev er, you will not be too weary to go to the eid. Herman, distinguished statesman and legislator of Portland, Oregon, who was recently on an eastern trip, is among those strongly in favor of L. T. Cooper, in the discussion over Cooper and his medicines, which has raged for the past year in cities visited by the young man on His educative campaigns, as he calls them. Cooper was explaining his new theories and medicines to Boston people during the Oregonian's visit to that city, and in a recent interview Mr. j Herman said: "My trip east accomplished more for me than I ever believed possible. It has actually been the means of restoring my health. I While in Boston I heard a great deal about this man Cooper and his medicines, and one morning I talked with a Boston banker who told me that he had been relieved by Cooper's medicines after ten years' chronic dyspepsia. For the past twenty years I have been a fearful sufferer with nervous dyspepsia. It has been so bad that it all but forced me to resign from the legislature. I.
