Then he dug out the center of a nicel/ baked loaf of cake and wax found in the middle of the dining room table with the lugar bowl between bin legs and most of the contents in his stomach. He has already cost $100 in doctor's bill*, and I feel that I am right in attributing my few gray hairs to the misery I esdured walking the floor with him at night during the first year of his life. What has he ever done to pay me for that? Ah! I hear his little feet pattering long out iu the hall. I hear bis little ripple of lauubtcr because he has escaped !? ? innllmp nml lins foiind his W8V up to my study at a forbidden boar. But the door is closed. D. in Detroit Fres Preis. THE SPEED OF BIROS. It Is Ret Kearly So Great as Has ' Geaerall? Asiaaed. If yoa consult the usually accepted an* thorities on the s|>eed of birda in their flight, you are likely to be misled by an exaggeration of from 100 to 300 per cent This is because figures hare been given on hearsay, appearance and very superficial obsorvatiou. But recently American, English and French observers have been / nmnarinir notes and are practically greed, after most careful calculation, on the speed of the best known birds. Tbey started with the carrier pigeon and have made him a base of comparison. He baa heretofore been credited with 110 miles an hour, but it is now agreed that he is entitled to 50. A quite recent long distance, carefully conducted test of DIK2 miles, from the Shetland islands to London, showed that the moat rapid pigeous made 37 miles an hour. On shorter distances none made mora than 50 miles. Because frigate birds have been teen far from land and have been supposed not to fly by night or to rest on the water they have been credited with a speed of from 150 to 200 miles an hour. If they did tly at that speed, tbey would have to overcome an atmospheric pressure of from 112 to 130 pounds to the square foot of flying surface. There is no certainty that tbey fly more rapidly than a passenger pigeon or that tbey do not fly at nicht or do not sleep on the water. The swallow, that is indeed a rapid flier, has boon credited with ISO miles ao hour, but be must be cat down to 05 miles, and the marten is fire miles behind him, though authorities have placed him ten niles ahead. The teal duck is brought down from 140 to SO miles an hour. The mallard is fire miles slower and (lies the same as the canrasback, while both of these are fire miles an hour ahead of the wild goose and eider dock. The pheasant makes 3S miles an hour, which is three miles ahead of the prairie chicken and quail, though the latter appears to fly much faster on account of his temporary burst of speed that seldom exceeds 200 feet. The crow flies 25 miles an hoar. Small birds appear to fly more rapidly than the largo ones and haTe deceived many observers. The humming bird does not fly as fast as many awkward appear* lng, rery much larger, slow flopping ?PhlMim TimM-IIfrild. A Proad Father.
