|V i: '< 'f*' ? ijV - ?????????? IK I The Press and Banner. BY HUGH WILSON. ABBEVILLE, S. C. *#-PabllBbed every Wednesday at 52 a year In advance. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1901. Abbeville to the Front. AH the stores In Abbeville are belne filled with the choicest and best of everything in their respective lines. The Increase In the number of our stores within the last ten years, and the increasing trade that oomet from distant territory, all go to prove thai this is a most attractive business place. The fame of the Abbeville merchants has gone abroad, and their good name, their good goods, their good bargains, and their polite treatment of customers has revolutionized the trade and business of the town that wai once very small when compared to the Abbe vllle of today. Ten years ago the ground upon which the Railroad Shops now stand was a cotton fleldand poor one at that. Ten years ago the great number of housei that are to be seen in the neighborhood of the shops was a wilderness ol pine trees ant chlnquepln bushes. The grounds upon which Is situated the Cotton Mill, and the cotton mill village, was ten years ago, a place where rabbits were annoyed by Bporty boys and yelping bounds Ten years ago all tbe land on wbicb tbc houses of Mr. Klrby, Mr. Chapman, Mr Morrow, Mr. Ellis, Mr. Coleman, and all o: that neighborhood, was In old field pines and a place lor the slaughter pen. Ten years ago tbe land on which are s( many nloe houses near W. H. Parker's home was a pasture for cattle or a cultivated field. Ten years ago we had no sohool houee Now we have the finest In the up-country. Ten years ago we had no stores on Wash Ington Street. Ten years ago we had no stores on Mali Street. \ Ten years ago Hill's fine stables were no' built. Ten years ago we had but one bank. Ten yearB ago we had no photographic gallery. Ten years ago we had five or six barrooms where liquor was sold night and day. Nov we have tbe dispensary, wbere liquor is sok In daylight only. Ten years ago Wardlaw Street was unimproved. Mr. Blake, Mrs. Lee, Mr. Hill, Mr Miller, Mr. Bradley, Mr. Brown, and perhapi fifteen others have built nice bouses. Ten years ago we had no laundry. Ten years ago we bad no electric lights. Ten years ago we bad no water works. Ten years ago we had no warehouse. Ton roam aim vet* h?ri hni ltf.t.lA fnofHtlfta fm .r w ,w" ginning ootton. Ten years ago we bad no organized fln company, and no fire alarm beli. Ten years ago we bad no Associate Reform ed Cburob building. Ten years ago we bad but one blgb ichoo for oolored children. Now we have two. Ten years ago we had no regular beef mar ket. We bad to depend upon Irregular sup plies. Now we have two splendid markeu from which beef may be had every day 1e the year. Ten years ago we had no restaurant ai which a man could get a bite to eat. Ten years ago we had no telegraph office R-" up-town. Ten years ago we had no express office 1e town. We had no delivery of express pack ages to consignees. They could remain 1e the depot at the pleasure of the agent. Ten years ago we had no telephone. Ten years ago we had no backs to meet;tbc . passenger trains day or night. Ten years ago we had not the present excel lent Bystem lor the delivery ol freight from the depots. jrji' Ten years ago Job printing in the city was in its Infancy. Now Abbeville Is well prepar ed for Job printing. Ten years ago we had no plaining mill. Ten years ago the printing presses were rue by men at the wheel. Now they are run bj > steam. Ten years ago we bad no hardware store. Ten years ago the old rookery belonging tc the Dendy estate, stood where Rosenberg'f splendid block now stands. Ten years ago, Abbeville bad only about sixteen or eighteen Btores, all told. Now wt have more than sixty business places. Tea years ago we didn't have a good hotel. In the face of all these facta, It may be pos Bible to find a croaker who thinks the town Is asleep, or going to the bow-wows. When the Almighty makes a mush-room, be doei It In a night, but when he goes to make an oak tree be takes a hundred years to complete the job. Abbeville, like the oak tree, growt steadily and continually. It takes no step backward, but moves on forever. Im This a Violation of tbe Poat Office Law ? A pretty young lady In this city lain receipt of the following Innocent looking letter: S. C., Sept. 13. 1901. I am engaged In an excellent work, and thought you might like to take It updurlns your leisure hours. It Is this: II you send 25 yearly subscriptions, at one dollar, for the two papers mentioned In tbe clroular, Mr. Smith will send you either a new high grade blcyclo. or a gold filled watch, and give you tne position of writing letters and sending circulars Just like tbls I send you, and pay you $20.00 per month. I am sure you will like the work If you give it a trial, for it Is a desirable position. It requires only a few hours work each day, and will not Interfere with such duties as school, housekeeping, etc., for you can do this In yonr room alter that is completed. Mr. Smith furnishes stationery and postage lor this work, bo that It will be of no expense to you. It Is no fake aB many may think, for he is a reliable man and will do what he promises. I shall be glad If you will allow me to send your name to Mr. Smith, that be may send you sample copies and further instruction as to the work. You will have to send 825.00 for the 25 subscriptions. If you prefer, you may m/\nnv xrnnrOAlf If mn dn Tint. nOTfi au vauvc iuv> iuvuv/ /vu> uv>? ^ v? ?.wwVV ? to wait to get up the subscriptions In order to get the position earlier, aDd have tbe paper Kent to yourself aDd friends complimentary. If you please let me bear from you at once, especially if you do not olearly understand every thing. Hoping to hear from you real soon, I am, Yours most sincerely. Tbe author of tbe letter 1b a most excellent young lady, who, of course Is perfectly sincere and entirely honest In what she saya, but we believe that she has been misled Into giving her sympathy and countenance to a soheme whloh cannot realize for any victim tbe promised good. Other young ladles In this town are enthusiastic over Illusive promises of like import. Tbe subscriptions are sought for a trifling little long primer paper which la represented to be printed at one of the many railroad ? i*? Ko ctotfl a( VIaHHo onH tro (JU LL1 Qtaviuuo lu buv dwmuv V4 ? .v. .Mla| WMV, ? v have no correct estimate of the number ol pretty young ladies In this town who are actively at the work of gathering up money lor what we believe to be as clear and palpable a cheat as was ever oflered to the public. The strange part of It Is, their slncerety and honest belief In the fairness of the proposition to give them 820 a month for securing 25 subscribers to a newspaper which few persons would care to receive through the mail at a dollar a year. We have no advice to give to anybody, but we would suggest to parents that they might consider well the propriety or impropriety ol allowing their pretty daughters to canvass for that or any other scheme. On the account of a present engagement at Sparlanbnrg that cannot close in time, the lent meeting at ML (Jarmel Is postponed until the 4th of October. I have quite a number of empty molasses barrels, both iron and wood hoop. Will close oat the lot cheap. Amos B. MorBe.
