Some of tbem bav ' taken "French leave" of their employers. A rather variable climate Is this in whlc we live. A short while ago tbe beaiiwaBa most intolerable, and not even theubadec trees, nor the shades of night afforded muc relief, and last week for a day or two thlcke . clothing and fires would not have been ur comfortable, Mr. J. T. Latimer and his little son Mario went to Abbeville Saturday. Yesterday morning being rainy and ba there were very few attendants at tbe Sunda; ' school services in any of our churches. Mr. R. E. Moseley, of Anderson, spent a fe^ hours here yesterday. 1 A friend of oura says that a short while ag the grass worried him so that bethought b would have to give up a small patch of hi cotton. Afterwards getting along better thai atone time he thought he would, he workei out the above mentioned cotton ana not calls it bis missionary patch. On the school building grounds the Indies o the Methodist church last Thursday had i cake and ice cream entertainment lor lb benefit of the missionary cause. The crowc In attendance was reasonably large, and th t receipts were Mattering. In the "local and special" column of th Press and Banner of last week is the follow ing: "The erstwhile 'conservatives' are 'con servatives' yet. They are practically unanl mous for McLaurln." That may be, and n< doubt is true, so far as some sections are con cerned, but as to this it is doubtful. '>VrbUs our present Senator has many strong support ers In said faction here, yet some or them, a least, in the coming primary, will vote "fo the other fellow." This opluion is risked be cause of present lights, but then every on knows that the results of a primary electioi ; are about as uncertain as the decision of i ' petit jury. Messrs. Jas. A. Hawthorne and J. M. Huck . abee, of Latimer, were in town Saturday. Little Miss Leila Moseley, of Abbeville, ha been for several days with relatives In thl place. LazaruB. !; ' h r For Boy? to Remember. l* A boy can have no higher nor more D worthy ambition than to become a true Christian gentleman. The following ? from an exchange is well worth remembering, and in following out its * suggestions every boy will the better realize his idea: e Roughness, blustering, and even s fool-hardiness are not manliness. The J firmest and most courageous men have v usually been the gentlest. Muscular strength is not health! A brain crammed only with facta is e not necessarily a wise one. J The labor impossible to the boy of e fourteen will be easy to the man of e twenty. The best capital for a boy is not * money, but the love of work, simple o tastes, and a heart loyal to his friends - and God. t " t l All special privileges of every sort e are obnoxious to the spirit of the age [ in which we live. He that will not serve God except * something be given him, would serve 8 the devil if he would give him more. 8 Children are usually, though not ali ways, as good as their parentage and bringing up allow them to be. ! vvnen you near a man say mar every e man has his price, you may depend 1 1 upon it that be at least is on the mart ket. , ? ' If we were all as good as we expect our neighbors to be, there would be immense improvement in society. An error frankly acknowledged is a , victory won. Davidson * College... 1 Davidson, N. C.
