Kc _ ==========s= The Press and Banner. BY HUGH WILSON. ABBEVILLE, S. C. fiSTPublished every Wednesday at $2 a year iu advance. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 1895. Colic iii HorNCM. As the remedy is highly recommended by several writers of high authority, and as colic is the disease most common among horses, and sometimes proves fatal, we deem it a matter 01 sheer justice to our readers that we call attention to chloride of lime as a remedy for colic which is claimed to be speedy and unfailing. Colic is produced by some fermenting food that causes a rapid accumulation of gas in the stomach, which distends the paunch and entrails, causing pair and finally inflammation and death i relief is not had in time. It is this gas that must be got rid of, and chloride o lime is the proper remedy. It neutralizes the gas, and brings speedy relief It is. so it is claimed, one of the most effective remedies known. And beinj cheap, and safe to use in small quanti ties is par excellence the remedy foi the family to handle, A heaping tablespoonful of the limt in a pint of warm water, or half pim spirits, is a dose for a full grown horse Every farmer should keep some of tli< chloride of lime always on baud. I is very useful about privies and othei places of ofTensiyesmell, manure piles etc. It is good for that or hoven, a: well ac colic, either in cattle or Horses Indeed, the two diseases are very iiear ly allied, and result very often fron the same causes. There may be coli< without bloat, but not often bloa without colic. And as colic Is adiseasi of quite frequentoccurrence every on< .should keeps remedy quite near bj them. From what is said and claimec for chloride of lime, we are disposed t< look upon it as the remedy for this ail roent. In the first stages, whiskey or somi other spirit may be used with thi drench, say half pint of the spirit ant half pint of the water. Jiut if th< J! ? AnAiioh fn nrA uisense uas uccu uu mug cuuugu j/iu duce inflammation, should prefer some thing less irritating tbau spirits if at al strong. In general use, we should usi nothing but water to dissolve the lim< and make a drench. Keep some chlo ride of lime in the barn and never b< without a reliable remedy for a suddei case of colic. The lime is good ti to drive away rats, sprinkled abou where they run. They will leave fo ' other quarters. Out of Work. Some person are often out of work Some of them are looking for work but possibly with a secret hope tha they may not find it. Doubtless the} . 1_ ?i- J?- -r i.i wouiu worn giauiy 11 iijey uuuiu um such work as they like aud be paid suet wages as they wish; aud perhaps thej would not be particular if there wen no work at all to do, provided th< wages were abundant and the pay sure There are many persons who profesi to be Christian workers, but they d< not seem to find just such work as the} like; it is too difficult, it is too obscure it is not sufficiently remunerative, anc they are not willing to do it. Yet al ^this time there is plenty of work whicl --"^^iieeds to be done, and real workers ar< overburdened with labor. The great Master goes to the markel place day by day, and says to theidlen Btanding there : "Go work in My vine yard to-day, and whatsoever is right ] will pay you." Let those who fear tb( Lord hearken to His call, and wbatso ever their hand findeth to do, let their do it with their might. It may noi seem to be easy work or profitabU work, but if it is work which He ap noints it shall not fail of a blessing at His hand.?The Christian. Do not Judge by 4'lothlntr. Boys, do not judge a man by his , clothing. A little incident occured or one of the lines of street cars of this city a few days since which is worthy of notice. A poorly clad woman entered the car carrying an infant in hei arms. As she sat opposite me I observed she seemed tioubled about something. When the conductoi passed through the car for the fares, she said in a very low voice : "Please sir, I have no money : let me ride this time and some other time I will pay you." "I can hear that story every day," said the conductor, in a loud, rough voice. "You can pay or get oft'.'1 "Two fares, please," said a plesaut voice, as a toil worn and sun browned hand passed the conductor ten cents, "Heaven bless you, sir," said the womau, and long and silently she wept the language of the heart so eloquenl to express our hidden thoughts. This nuni in worn and soiled irurments was oue of God's noblemen. He possessed a heart to feel for the woes of others, aud although the act was but a trille it proves that we cannot, with safety, judge a mau by his clothing?"Foi many a true heart beats beneath ti ragged jacket." / Jii Case of Accident. If a lishbone becomes lodged in the throat, it can generally be removed b} swallowing a raw egg at once. Glyceriue, with a few drops of car bolic acid added, makes a good lotioc for slights cuts aud abrasions of th* skin. lu case of swallowing poisons acci dentally, the first step is to'securevom itiug. A mustard emetic is usually the most efficacious. A heaping teaspoonful of the ordinary ground mustard mixed in:,'haTf a cupful ol lukewarm water Is about the righl quanity. If mustard fails to act, trj a tablespoonful of powdered alum in a tablepoonful of water. It used to be customary to adminis ter castor oil when a person swallowed anything with sharp edges, as bits ol glass or china, but recent writers advist that articles of food be given instead, which will cling about the fragments, and so protect the bowel walls as th< wlirtlo mass mnvps downward. PntH. toes are the best for this purpose. Tht , individual should be fed on them foi two or three days. The potatoes maj be cooked in a variety of ways?baked boiled, fried or creamed. IIouHeholil Hint*. Strong alum water is efficacious as 8 vermin destroyer. Add a teaspoonful of powdered borax to the bath, as it will soften the water and prove very invigorating. In boiling rice, peas, or macaroni, save the water in which they were boiled for use in soups. In making hard pudding sauce add sugar gradually to butter, and it will cream more quickly. ^Stuff" a rag saturated with cayenne pepper in rat holes. ltittt or IUuIn lor Repetition. Use kerosene and whiting to clean tinware. wa L Use soda, potash, or copperas for Spi ]cleausing zinc-lined sinks. y* ' Use a furniture polish madeof1|n- Ab ' seed oil and hard cider or vinegar. &> Use whiting and a chamois skin to gp | clean delicate paints, much as you do Crs i for silverware. j Use plenty of turpentine, to which a L ; few drops of carbolic acid is added, to ^ i keep insects from the pantry. ; I'se a cloth or bag tied over your T|[ i broom to sweep ceilings or sidewalks Dl j with, if you haven't a brush for the I purpose. J Use very strong lye when cleaning up the floors, and let it dry in tbe cracks to keep moths from under the carpet. Use a cloth dipped in weak ammonia : water with which to lightly wipe ofl' > the carpets. rt brightens them won- T i derfully. Th j j Use a little ammonia in the water in o which you wash window lights and egp ; mirrors. Then polish quickly with far, i chamois skin or tissue paper. ^ 1 I Some Palatable Sweet Pickles. I ' > i! Use for these the rind of a goodr I sized watermelon, writes Florence Bar! rett in an article on "Pickles, Sweet ][ j and Sour," in the July Ladies' Home lr [! Journal. Pare and cut into thick ,i slices. Boil one ounce of alum in a ' I gallon of water aud pour over the r | sliced meloD, letting ii stand on the I back of the stove for half a day. He, | move from the alum water and let it sit t in cold water until cold ; drain. Have a ready a quart of vinegar, three pounds j of brown sugar, an ouuee of stick ciu[ namon and half an ounce of cloves, ci, r Boil sugar and viuegar; strain ; add the spices and rind, and boil until the rind 1 is soft. For neaches and Dears use the s same proportions of vinegar and sugar, 1 but not quite so much spice. 2 Ejjjr Lemonade. ? Egg lemonade is a delicious drink > I that we learned to make in the country ~ ' last Summer, and often since when it i has been too warm for solid food, and ' it has been found a very agreeable way p of getting nutriment. To make it, I take two fresh eggs and beat the whites 1 and yolks separately until as light as I I possible. To half ? pint of boiling * x water add the Juice of two large lem* * ons, and half a cupful of sugar; stir until it Is dissolved, and add quickly a pint of ice brokeu very fine. Mix the v whites and the yolks of the eggs well * ' in one vessel, raise the lemonade well J,?1 I above them, and pour it in ; turn a " quickly into another pitcher, and back tio " j again into the first.
