From the Rev. John Ileminenway. Believing that the readers of the Christian Neighbor will be glad to hear from their old friend, I have taken the liberty of making some extracts from a private letter. It is hoped that such freedom will be excused by my venerable and highly esteemed frieud who, in the past, has favored the Neighbor and its readers with many (none too many) Christian communications. His letter brings to mind the line?' An: wno tnat loves can loye enough." Saint Anthony Park, Minn., May 15, 1893. My Very Dear Christian Brother Browne I thank you for your very kind good letter of May 9lb. ****** I have been greatly afflicted since 1 last wrote to you. My dear daughter Elizabeth died on the 27th of last December aged 40 years. That was the heaviest affliction that ever fell upon me in mv loner life of 78 vears. excent ing of the death of my precious wife, December 7,1878. Elizabeth had been very Bick for much of the time for four years previous to her death. She , suffered the most during the those four years ot any person that I ever knew. * * * * * I * I She was by nature very gifted, and very eloquent in temperance and in religious meetings. In a prayer meeting I have known her to exceed in pathetic eloquence any person that I ever heard. She was for many years a very active member of the Methodist Church ; and she made it a rule of her Christian life to talk personally, when alone with an unconverted person, on 1 "the great salvation." On the next day after her death a leading woman _? ti? if?n 11.... _i L ijT7>i: vi tut? ineiuuuist uuurcu wiu ui x^u^abeth, in an emphatic manner, "She was a Christian, if there ever was one in the world." it is a great consolation to me that my dear daughter, not only .lived a Christian life, but she died with a hope full of immortality. In her last sickness, when she knew, and we all knew, that death was inevitably near her, she calmly said: "The prospect is bright before me." "Bock of Ages" was her favorite hymn in her last illness. I have also been afflicted in the removal of my daughter Maria and her good husband from this place. Last May they went to Maine to live, and I never expect to see them again in this world. It was so evidently the will of God for them to return to Maine that I felt it to be my duty to be cheerfully resigned to their removal from me. Maria is my oldest child, and is now nearly 47 years old. She is very dear to me. She is an active member of the Methodist Church, and is greatly be1 ?J I .11 /~1l !~t! I I M|1 a!m luveu o_y an uun?imiLt, auu uy an 01 Liners also, as far as sinners can love a Christian. She is a woman of an exoellent mind and extraordinary good common sense, and a favorite with all children. Her only child, a lovely little daughter, died ten years ago. ****** I live with my good son, William Penn and his good wife. They have one child, a daughter of 14 years of age. She is a very lovely and affectionate girl, and an ambitious scholar. , aud is determined to have a college education. William and his wife are members of the congregational church here. ****** My youngest son, Zenas, lives one fourth of a mile from me. He is near- ' ]y 38 years old, he has a good wife, and , a son nearly three years old, aud a i daughter three months old. He like William is a very bind good son to me, 1 and is I trust a Christian. His wife is a member of the congregational church. I am glad to say that my sons are both Peace men, and 7 have a sincere respect for ''Sidi H. Browne" and love the Christian Neighbor. * And now I suppose you would like to have me write something about my- i self. I have been afflicted for more than a vear at times with vertigo. . Last Monday as I was sitting in a large ' rocking chair reading with a large book in both my hands, my head suddenly became confused and I unconsciously upset the chair sideways, and fell heavily on the floor, but I immediately recovered my consciousness, yet I think I am liable to such spells any day' .' . . . . . I have been wonderfully favored t.hrnnch life, till within a vear. with good health, excepting several short sickness, so that I have never been confined to my bed for 24 hours in my life at any one time. But I now see that I have arrived at that period of feeble old age, so truly described in the last chapter of Ecclesiastes. I know I must be drawing near the close of my life on earth; but if it is the will of my Saviour I hope He will continue my poor, faulty unprofitable life till the close of my 80th year (which will be December 30, 1894, and then I hope He will take me home among His saints in heaven. Please remember me kindly and respectfully in the "Christian Neighbor" to all its readers every where. The blessed and beautiful cause of Peace is still very dear to me, and if I now had ?:ii: -r J - *i - - OI1U lUUUBttUU Ui 111lUllo ui uouurs CO give for benevolent purposes the cause fl of Peace would surely get nine hun- I dred and ninetynine millions of it. m You ask if I intend to attend the Columbian Exposition ? No, I have not had such a thought. My health and strength will not admit of it. You kindly inquire "can you not writea letter for the Neighbor long or short?" I dare not, as my health now is, attempt to write an original article for the press, it would so much con fuse my mind. I can write quite easi- I ly a letter to a friend, as such labor re- I quires very little fixed thought; but perhaps I shall not long be able to do | as much as that. It is very painful to me, now in mv old age, to look back over my long life I and see how much I have failed in ^ everv relation and resoect from' child hood to old age. "Love is the fufiill- 4 ing of the law." S But alas! I have imperfectly kept | the law of love, for I never at all times have loved any human being y^Nas much as a perfect love beautifully y Requires?not even my good father and f goNj mother, my two good brothers and \hree good sisters, nor my precious H wife and dear children. Mauy times V my dear daughter Elizabeth said to 1 me in the latter part of her life, " You P are a dear good Papa." " You have A been a dear good Papa to me." But I did not love her enough. I was the oldest of a family of six children, but they are all in heaven but me, the last one went there more than ten years ago. -l Your brother in the kingdom and Jj patience of Jesus Christ.
