Aii Invocation. 1IY TIIK RKV. JOHN KOSSKLL. Our Father, God. wo cotne to Thee, For Thou ha>t said, "Whore two or three I Together in My name agree, There In the midst am I." We come to Thee, imr gracious Lord, To worship Thee with one accord. And pray, according to Thy word, "Our present needs supply." ... ?..?... ?KaiiI ?b 1 ?ou hliuwcni <111 tfiuui. ... ..... And whether we sinceiely cull On Thee, whon at Thy feet we fall; Or whether in our hen ts We entertain debased desires. As feed and fun old carnal fires, While yet we know Thy word requires Truth in the inward parts. (Jive us the "faith that works by love," Affections fixed on things above. That we may silt the fullness prove Of Thy redeeming trace. Then when at last our rare is run. The battle fought, the victory won. We all may hear Thee say. "Well done," And see Thy glorious face. The Baptism of Fire. Suppose we saw an army si11inir1 down before a granite fortress, andj they told us they intended to batter it; down. We might ask them, "liow?" j They point ti.s to a cannon-ball. Well,! but there is no power in that! It is! heavy, but not more than a hundred; weight. If iill the men in tho army ; were to throw it, that would make no impression. They say, "No," but j look at the cannon. Well, but there; is no power in that; it is a machine, and nothing more. Hut look at the; powder! Well, there is no power Inj that; a chihl may spill it; a sparrow; may pick it up. Yet this powerless; powder and this powerless ball are put j into this powerless cannon ; one spark j of fire enters it, and, then, in the j twinkling of an eye, that powder is a, flash of lightning, and that cannonball i9 a thuudcr-bolt which smites as if it had been sent from heaven. So' it is with our Church machine^ of the present day. We have our instruments for pulling down the strong-1 hold; but, O for the baptism of fire! j He who is "Love" can not be imagined to yiew with complacency the violence of human hostility; and we nrn fnllv warranted bv everv view of! his character as revealed to us to l>e-j lieve that lie will not fail to extirpate j forever that great "Abomination of! Desolation," which in the production of crime and misery, has thrown all other sources of evil, by comparison, into the shade. As Christians, and philanthropists, let us then encourage hope, and be animated to exertion. The eyes which behold our present endeavors to attain this blessing of uiii-i versal, permanent peace, may be clos-i ed in 'death before its happy era, but iU/v.. triH> iirmo in 111CJ uiaj IIW?> I'taiu 1IIVU M?|?v j anticipation. The present magnitude] of the evil against winch we contend is no ground of despair; but, while it! invests with a paramount grandeur and interest the enterprise, it leaves; open a wide path to success, snd presents to our delighted view a boundless prospect of beneficent glory. Fifty years ago seven humble shoemakers in a shop at Hamburg undertook the work of evangelization 011 the principle of individual responsibility. In twenty years they had organized fifty churches, gathered ten thousand converts, distributed four hundred I thousand Bibles and eight million pages of tracts, and preached the Gos-< pel to fifty millions of people. As; they went from place to place the j work grew, and new converts inspired i with similar zeal became helpers, sol that a population as great as that of j the United Slates or the Congo Free! State heard the Gospel within those twenty years. If any are distrustful I of mere arithmetic as applied to the nroblem of missions, here is a praeti -- eal proof that f( ii perfectly feasible so to organize the work as to rcnch a luin ureu minions 01 peup?e ever) } c^al, and that, too, with only an insignifi-! cunt Gideon's baiid. In how many churches do the ( "young men and maidens, old men ! and children," make it a part of their business in the sanctuary to sing the' praises of God? Practice varies. In! one church, a voluntary by the choir, perhaps in operatic style, artistic and, cold, takes the place of an opening! hymn, poorly preparing the listening audience for the Scripture lessons and| the prayeis. Perhaps the congrega-j tion is allowed to unite in singing one of the hymns of the service; but if so, it is the sum total of the part borne by j them in the worship of the hour. It is a sad and cheerless spectacle kindling no euthusiasm and warming no souls. Sadder and colder is what we I sometimes Jind in our sanctuaries, a I service in which the minister at onej end of the house and quartet at tlie other are the only persons who nre-j 3ume to use their voices in the house! of God.?Musical Herald. Hits not the habit of strict obedience IO T? ~ .1.... il.A ! waui'ii ; in a iujuici ua> , inu uauu- i tion of unquestioning obedience may | have been carried to an excess. But lias not the pendulum swung away lie-; yond reason ? One of the lirst things which God means that each one of us should do is to submit to law, to pro-! l>er and natural authority. To the child, this authority is embodied in the father and mother. The first step toward obeying God lies in obeying the parents. The son learns to obey God by obeying God's representatives. How near to me, my God, Tliou art! Kelt In the throbbing of my heart? Nearer than my own self to mo; ?>oi iniik is rc.ii, \vi uioui i ni'i'. Thou tillest my brink's hidden springs; Thou glvist my \\i?hcs heavenward wings; j I live tliy life, I breathe thy breath, And in thy presence is no death! However early in the morning you seek the gate of access you find it al-, ready open; ami however deep the} midnight hour when you find yourself in the sudden arms of death, the! winged prayer can bring an instant! Saviour near. ni>n flVOP \V*1U fllll! ii! ? nMiL-f ouwint ' JL 11CI t t ? Vi ? WJj ?n?v? ?i uivob .1 >? t\"I | concord ami harmony between the teaching* of the Spirit and the testimony of the Holy Scriptures; and there is 110 inconsistency or contradiction between them. People who are always in high spir- i its soon wear out, says a physician. It may be, but people who are always low-spirited wear other people out. Our sentiments, our thoughts, our words lose their rectitude on entering] certain minds, just as sticks plunged in the water look bent. "Sincerity is speaking as we think,! believing as we pretend, acting as we I profess, performing as we promise, and being as we appear." Reflect upon your present blessings | of which every man has many, not of your past misfortune, of which all I men have some. He is happy whose circumstances suit his temper; hut he is more excel-! lent who can suit his temper by any circumstance. Take the hours of reflection or recreation after business, and never before it. ! Unless the habit leads to happiness, the best habit is to contract none. No one should laugh at men but him who right heartily loves him. I Reconciled to thy Brother. My worthy grandfather was a man , of keen feelings, and of warm heart, i but easily excited to wrath. He had a I tl".? lio /loni'lv li?Vf?d- One! Ml Willi.'! ? IJWlll liv uvu. ij day they fell into a dispute, and each ! relumed to his lioinc in anger. This happened on a Friday. As (he evening drew near, my good grandmother. who was another Martha, full of activity, began to make preparation for the .Sabbath. "Come dear Joseph," she exclaimed, "the night is approach-1 ing; come and light the Sabbath j lamp!" But he, full of sadness and anguish, continued walking up and. down the room. Iiisgood wife spoke! nimin in anxietv. "See, the stars are already shining in the firmament oil (he Lord, ami our Sabbath lamp is not yet lighted." Then my grandfather took his hat, and evidently much troubled hastened out of the house. But in a few moments he returned with tears of joy in his eyes. "Now, dear Rebecca," he exclaimed, "now I am ready." lie repeated his prayer and with gladness lighted the Sabbath lamp. Then lie related the dispute which had occurred in the morning, adding, "I could not pray and light my lamp before becoming reconciled with my brother Isaac." "But howdid you manage to do it so soon?" "Oh," be replied, "Isaac had been as much troubled as I was; he could not begin the Sabbath either without beitur iwonoilnri with mo. So we met in the street; he was coining to me, and I was going to him, and we ran into each other's arms and wept." Cost of the White House. Many people believe that the $50,000 a year which the President gets as his salary is the sum total. This is a mistake. The estimate of the amount which Congress is to appropriate this year lies before us, open at tlie page relating to the President. We see that $30,004 is asked for him in addition to his salary of $50,000, to pay the salaries of his subordinates and clerks. His Private .Secretary is paid $3,250, his Assistant Pi ivate Secretary ?2,250, his stenographer $1,800, live messengers each $1,-00, a steward $1,000, two door-keepers who each get $1,000, four other clerks at good salaries, one telegraph operator, two ushers getting $1,200 a ml $1,400, a night usher getting tfl,2(H), a watcnman wnogeis c>yin?, anu a man who takes care of tires who receives $8(54 a year. In addition to this, there is set down $S,000 for incidental expenses, such as stationary, carpets, and the care of the President's stable. And further on, under another heading, there is a demand for nearly $40,000 more. Of this $12,500 are for repairs and furnishing the White House, $2,500 for fuel, $3,000 is for the green house, and $1,200 is for gas, matches and tlie stables. The White House, all told, costs the country, in connection with the President, considerably ! over $125,000 a year. ! ISeing kind and cheerful in doing one's duty, helping others and loving ! God, is the best way to show that we are pious in the true sense of the i word. DUE WEST Due West, Abbeville County, S. C. Twenty-Seventh Year. OPENS FIRST MONDAY IN OCTOIJER. First-class teachers.
