r I ??.?I EADEAU AT A BALL. HIS OBSERVATIONS ON THE POLITENESS OF ENGLISH "SOCIETY." I ? ! The Croat 1'eoplo Ilnvo Very I.ittlo Grace?A Typical Incident? An American I-urty's Success? The Kxample Set l>y tlio Onccn. * Mrs. Norton and Lord lloashton knew! most of the quests, and pointed out the notable ones, and nearly every one was notable. Yet there were crowds of people wlioni apparently neither host nor hostess knew by sight, and doubtless ninny whom they hatnl or despised. For certain people liavo a right to lie invite;!, as they have a right to go to court. It is not society without I hem; and the neatest magnates, when they open their houses,' want them filled with the ' world.*' Perhaps [ that is wliy so littlo courtesy is shown the < guest:; after they arrive. The duchess, I learned, was in a rage that night, for her mother had recently died, and ! sho had been unwilling to lay aside her j mourning, but the duke had some business relations in Egypt with the khedive?lshmail Pasha, the wieked one?and it was important to his grace to be civil to the African poten- j tale, so he forced the duchess to open her house for tho ball, and she could hardly be courteous to her principal guests, far less the. inferior ones. I found this out for myself, for later in the evening, when royalty had left, Mi's. Motley j saw the duchess apparently disengaged, and took me up to her. After my name and posi|j\ tion had l?een mentioned I made some little comparison of English balls with American, complimentary to my hostess, but although there was no one else claiming her attention,, she turned deliberately away from both Mrs. I Motley and myself in the midst of my sentence and left us to ourselves. Then Mrs. Motley explained that the grief of her grace had lieen disturbed, and that we were the sufferers. I hold myself at liberty to relate this incident because it is typical. The great peoplo had very littlo grace.1 most indifferent way; offering n hand, it is time, l?ut with 110 show of cordiality*, and j without a bow cr the slightest inclination of tho head, hardly a recognition in tho glance.! The most intimate friends said "IIow do do,,: j and "IIow de do" back again, and passed on.! Tho superior always makes the advance, for j tho inferior must not presume. There is 110! more equality hi socie ty than nt court, and! those v ho wish to make themselves acceptable I must bo careful to wait for their betters tc | notice them; otherwise tho rebuff is certain.! We have no rank, and the English can not I I. npply to us the rules which they enforce sc j rigorously among themselves. A disposition is also increasing to recognize the fact that distinctions may exist in other countries different from thoso so highly prized in England, and, above all, Americans have lately bccorao the fashion. Still, I remember, a countrywoman who had a great success. | She stayed at scores of country houses and I was as generally received as anybody in j England. She told me it was all very well! till it camo to dinner, and tlicn the always had to go in with the doctor. I have seen the great English people snubbed very hard by those still higher than themselves in the social scale. The queen sets the example, j and is disgracefully rude to any subjcct whom she wishes to punish for a fancied misdo- j meanor. She hardly recognized her former -f favorit?, tho Baroness Burdett-Coutts, v. hcu she cam? to court, because that lady married to please herself instead of her sovereign. In! the same spirit stupid dukes look down on the rre.it.est-, authors and soldiers and the most; p famous politicians as people whom their notice1 raises, and on whom their disfavor indicts a ]>ositivo barm. The curious part of it is that I the other people concur in the opinion. ?Adam Eadcuu's Letter. Knew Whore to Draw the Lino. r Rastus?Mastab Suiif, I wan's tor ax j*o' er question. Grant's history which has never Ix-en made public was given to mo by S. i>. Elkins. It ktius that some time in IS.", when the general was in haul lines in St. Louis and seeking for something to do to | earn bread for liis family, the University of Missouri, located at Columbia City, had a vacancy occur in tho chair of mathematics. Gen. Grant, who had been disappointed in an application for the position cf county surveyor at St. Louis, determined to apply for tho vacant professorship. Ho wrote a modest letter to the board of trustees, in which ho stated his qualifications and his needs. Another man got the place. A year or two boforo ho died, in mentioning the act to 31r. El kins, who is a graduate of tho university, Gen. Grant, with his usual simplicity of manner, said: "I think I could have filled tho place quite well. I was pretty well up in mathematics at West Point. But if 1 hail got the place 1 presume I should not now I e here.?I>ew York Cor. Cincinnati Enquirer. Visiting tlio J'aris 1'iro Department. After the well-served and well-cooked breakfast had been disposed of, the wholo party were driven in carriages to the best engine house in Paris, and a minute inspection of everything was made by the forei-rn firemen. The Americans were particularly struck l>v the gymnastic training given th<; Paris firemen, who are tanght t:> jicrforin all the feats of the acrobat. Mr. Purroy, of t!io New York Loard, was much interested in an experiment to prove the efficiency of t!io electric light in penetrating smoke. A lire was started in one corner of a cellar filled with smoke. A man enveloped in a suit much like that worn by a diver was then sent down. The air that he breathed came from without, and after much looking he discovered by the aid of an electric light where the iiro was ami extinguished it. Mr. Purroy will probably introduce this feature into the .\eiv York lire department.?Theodora Stanton'* Paris Latter.
