How the Thirst is Kxcited. I had ail interesting talk to-day with Pro- C( lessor J. PI. Long, the chemist, on the subject of dipsomania. I have long believed that n the thirst for alcohol in the human race arose from the decomposition of sugar in the stom- U| ach and intestines, and I was asking him his ?pinion of my theory. 0| What I elicited from him is in brief this: Alcohol is formed from grape sugar only, and K not from cane sugar; but cane sugar, and even starch, are easily transformed into grape sugar by what is called the glycogo- " nous power of the liver and bile. To promote T fermentation and the formation of alcohol from this grape sugar, there are necessary moisture, warmth and a yeast-germ of some kind. The intestines furnish the warmth and E moisture; and though it is not easy to see where the yeast-germ could come from, yet, as fermentation in the stomach is not uncommon, it may possibly exist in the intestines ] also. As the bile docs not enter the stomach, L any grapo sugar and alcohol that it may form K would bo formed only in the intestines, but it Pj could be absorbed into the circulation as readily there as anywhere else. If so much as half a teaspoonful were absorbed daily in _ this manner, it would excite a thirst for alcohol in the system. The theory seems to bo confirmed by the fact that savages, who ^ live mostly on meat and eat no sugar and t(] little starch, do not make or uso any intoxi- aj eating drink. The professor says it would 11: reauire Ions and patient investigation to de termino whether there is anything in tho theory or not, and that ho means to look into it.?Cor. Chicago Journal. David Davis and tho Sharper. By one of Judge Davis' friends I am told a story which has not appeared in print yet, I believe. It is, I think, characteristic of ? him, and shows that ho was not entirely deficient] in liumor. A confidence man, no doubt thinking that tho bulky form of the justice would make him an easy prey to his wiles, stepjxxl up to him in tho Metropolitan bank one day while Mr. Davis was depositing a large amount of money in bills. It was 1 an attempt at the old trick of dropping a bill, I . drawing the victim's attention to it in tho hope of diverting his watchfulness from tho bigger pile of notes about to bo deposited by liim, and make away with them at the opportune moment. p Tho scamp dropped his $0 note on the floor, \\ nudged the justice in tho side with his elbow, 01 and whispered: "You've dropped something." "All right," quietly remarked Mr. Davis, who knew a thing or two about the gentry to which his officious friend belonged; "I'll tako caro of it." England's New Enfield Martini Rifle. Tho new Enfield Martini is to bo 0.40 ? calibre, as against 0.45, the size of the present Martini. No change is to bo niado in tho -r leugth of the barrel, but the weapon with tho j i bayonet fixed will weigh 10 pounds 4 ounces, j '"r< us against 10 pounds. The breech action remains unaltered, but there is an addition in thoshapo of a safety bolt to prevent tho trigger falling. There are also one or two minor alterations. In appearance, however, Q the rifle is much altered, for the thick end of J the ban-el, or nearly IS inches, is incased with wood, so as to enable the soldier to retain his _ grip when tho rifle becomes heated in action. Tho fore end of the sto:-k has been thinned away and grooved from underneath tho rifle, to prevent rain from lodging between tho barrel and tho stock. To give a little less straightne-ss to tho butt the breech block is , also attached at a more acute angle than r~ formerly. Tho bayonet, in place of being at- I V. tach~<l to tho side, is now to Ixj placed under Iln.' tho barrel to assist in keeping it down during | (.u the act of firing. At last we are to have a j solid drawn metallic cartridge ease. It will contain 85 grains ol' powder and a bullet _< weighing grains.
