Sr T&e Press and Banner. ABBEVILLE. S. C. ^^Vednesday, June 25, 1884. V Marriage of Deaf Mutes. tUa UWt. T O TtnrKnr H D nnr I IIC ? U. V. j formed the niarriHge ceremony in a novel manner at or near Mt. Carmel last Thursday, in tljc marriage of Miss Lucy Rogers "of this county, to Mr. David Flow of ^Mecklenburg county, N. C. The contracting parties are mutes and could neither hear the preacher nor anexcept by signs. The manner o^ouWicting the cercmonv was in this way: The questions for tbo groom nud ~ the bride were written on separate sheets of. pan^r. and at the proper time each reaothe slip on which was written the questions which the preacher asked be Tore tlie auaience in mu uxiai man.n.. The responses were signaled, and a sister of the bride spoke for the preacher by signs in the request to join hands, ami the benediction was pronounced upon the, loving couple, who heard none of it.! Miss Ropers is an educatod lady, of at-j tractive manners, and we hope that-she, and her husband may be nono the less; happy because of their misfortune. To Make Corn on Bottoms. Mr. J. Frank Keller of our county,! who is a famous corn grower, gives us this formula for working a crop planted on stubble, and we give it to the public. If directions are followed, he says a good crop is suro to be made with ordinary seasons: Corn planted Juno 14 in furrow, covered by two furrows on it. Plow toth Put two fur ulmlirc 111! (Vn </u vijv iwM. ?. rows on that the same day. On the 2(>th| run around. Hoe. In three days throw; dirt ba^k to corn with one furrow on , oach side with shovel? heel sweep in rear. | Two days later, split middles with two! furrows?shovel and heel sweep. Ten days later, two shallow furrows with short shovel and heel sweeps?two shallow furrows in centre. Fine Fruits. L Mtvny of our citlzcns have excellent A gardens and tine orchards, but none ofj * thom have superior fruits in greater va?j riety than Mr. John \V. Sign, He and, his excellent wife, and some of theirI neighbors are luxuriating in the choicest ! apples, plums, peaches, cherries, apricots: unci other of the most delicious health-{ giving fruits that ever delighted the vis-; ion or gratified the taste of a country edi- ] tor. The investment and lahor necessary | for the planting and cultivation of fruits J lias yielded an abundant harvest, ana made their lot blossom jus the rose. Xoth-1 ing could be more beautiful or more :>c-i ceptahle than the present of a basket of fruit from Mr. and Mrs. Sign. Grand Barbecue. , Ninety-Six never does anything ex-11 rept in the best manner, and she has now undertaken to give a grand barbecue: i on the Fourth of July. We are author- i ized to say that all the candidates and the fmblic generally are invited to attend, t will be a big time. The candidates 11 will be expected to make their best speeches, prove their earnestness and j i Real in behalf of the people, and lastly)1 but not least Important, they will have j m opportunity to convince their consti-it tuents of their ability, fitness, and will- j > ingness to serve their country. A splen- i [ did barbecued dinner will be furnished, j and a hearty welcome awaits all who may go. The Good Old Mountaineer. i - - > ? ? <-1 T>-:l ' ! Our trieno Air. ?j. i . roumv, puusura i the oldest county n iiwspapcr in the State,, nnd it and its most excellent publisher,!' like old wine, grow better with each sue-:' ceedingvear. The Greenville Enterprise ] and Mountaineer 1mm turned its sixtieth!vear in the full vigor of an honorable Journalistic career, in which the public: are well pleased. "Men may come and in oh may go," but the Mountaineer and ' John G. Baily live forever. 1 * ""* , Private Hanging. f The Baptists will hang their new church bell in the steeple of the building!1 to-morrow. Only the necessary carpen-11 ters will l>9 permitted to witness thej. hanging. Remarks on the tone of the ( bell will be reported to the newspapers or to any member of the congregation. The Biggest Beets. Mr. B. K. Beacharn has a beet which is ! f twenty inches in circumference. lieif bought the seed from VV. S. Uothran it i , Co. ! Mr. W, P. Wardlaw has a beet which I is about the length of a mule's head. It is a present from Mr. DuPre. j RIB. A. y. CONNER, ciiWJ lasi weanes-, day week at the house of his son-in-law ! Mr. Thomas J. Hearst, near White Hall, I alter a long mental derangement. Mr. j Hearst and his family watched over him with care, hut in an unexpected moment, he eluded their watch, and the consequent exposure only hurried the end. which was soon to come in any event. Mr. Connor had lived an eventful life. He leaves a wife and childreu to mourn : his death. I Colonel T. B. Crews, editor of the! Lanrcnsi'ille h era/rl, answers intorroira j tories in another column. He, like Colonel James H. Rice, of Ninety-Six, pre-! ferred delay of publication to abridgment j of views. Whether the reader agrees in i opinion with the Pitma and Banner, we i f(resume none will deny that they havei teen enlightened bv the many able letters which we have published. Last week we erred in stating that Mr. Henry Hammond died at the residence of his son Mr. C. V. Hammond. It was at the bouse of Mr. J. S. Ham mona tnatne aien, ana wnere ne received y the unceasing and untiring attention of a devoted son who seldom lell his bedside for the last few months of his life. < We misprinted Mr. John L. Addison < rs Mr. Jas. L. Adiison in the replie3 on the school question. There is no such man in Edgefield as Jas. L. Addison. It was John L. Addison, Esq., the lawyer at Edgefield, who kindly gave us an opinion on that subject. We had much rain yesterday. Those of our friends whose crops of small grain 1 are still exposed are distressed at the prospects. Much of the corn on bottom lands will be lost because of the continued rains, which prevent the land from being plowed. Mrs. William Verell died at Buck Level last week, aged 75 years. She was a consistent member of' the Methodist church. Her sudden death is an irreparable loss to her aged husband, with whom Bbe had lived for nearly fifty years. We expect to go to Due West Commencement to-day, and the reader may j expect something in reference thereto in , next week's issue of the Pre** and Ban-1 ner. As usual Abbeville will send a] delegation of her choicest citizens. The Bradley Democratic Club is here-' by ordered to meet at Bradley on Satur- j day before Sale Day in July at 3 o'clock, j Every member is requested to be pres- j ent, as there will be important business to be transacted. Miss Mary C. Shaw, of Savannah. Ga., while on a visit to Due West tliea at the i residence of Dr. N. Henry last week., She was eighty-two years of age. Heri remaius were sent to Savannah lastFri-| day. Mr. Samuel L. Abney, requests us to! note the fact that he has opened a barber! shop in Mr. Bruce's Shoe Shop. He hopes to give all customers good satisfac-; tion. The Union Meeting of the Abbeville] Baptist Association will be held next Saturday at ten o'clock in the Abbeville Baptist church. Let those who store their oats in houses without threshing, bear in tnind . that the rats will in a short time, entirely j destroy such crops. Mb. Benet is off delivering anniversary orations before the Literary Societies of the different institutions of learning. Two and four bushel grain sacks can be bad at P. Rosenberp A Co. in any a!?_. n-n ~ i.. ? a u? ijuaiuifrY. v/?ii cariy nuu ur su^pucu. The oat crop hereabout has been abundant, but much of the straw has been injured by the wet weathor. Now is your opportunity to get gents' first-class hand made shoes at net cost from P. Rosenberg A Co. The Long Cane Democratic club will rrieet at Gilgal church on Saturday, July , 6th, at 3 o'clock P. M. The joists for the second floor of the new hotel are being placed iu position. It will not be long until the farmer will begin to sow turnips. Let every man make calculations to sow oats and turnips. Ottr farmers should save an abundant supply of oat seed.
