^ _____?_. The Press and Banner, ABBEVILLE, S. C. Wednesday, March 9, 1881, Thn Pronospil Railroad. It has been reported that the Clyde Cornk r??y. which bought the Greenville am! Columbia Railroad, has In contemplation the building of the Atlantic and French Hroad Valley Railroad. We are not sponsors for this report, having heard it in a general way. It will be remembered that this is the road, the building of which was agitated last summer. Meetings were held and speeches made ami ?lnl?n?| mini i iVsli'.! in tin* nri > vuuniuci uuiv iinv. vw, ......... ? r _ .. Jeet. A few weeks ago a petition was l>eit?g circulated for signatures, praying the County Commissioners to order an election in those townships through which the road is lo run, m>on the question of voting a tax to the same. ' This road would run by Donalds, Due West and Abbeville to the Greenwood and Augusta Jtoud at or near Trlckem. There ure hardly two opinions as to the desirability, rather we might say necessity, of building this loud. Therefore we need not elaborate the advantages which would accrue therefrom. The question turns rather upon the manner in which we shall raise the money to built it. For ourselves, we believe that taxation is the only Just and equitable method by which it can be done. All the citizens along the route of the proposed road are equally benefitted by the reduction in freights, the increased value of property, the business, social religions and achool advantages which flow from It. Yet, It you attempt to bullil it by privuie sunH-nplion, tiie liberal mail will be forced to give more than ills quota to make up the deficiencies of less liberal and progressive ones. Uy means of a tax every one contributes in aeeordance with his means, and therefore In accordance with the good he desires. The grading is going on on the end of the J"bad from Bctton to Kasley, and we ought to V be moving. God helps those who helpthem.sel.ves. If the Clyde Company has any Idea of building this road; and we can readily understand Its vast Importance to It, they will not feel much encouraged to undertake the work, unless they see a disposition on our part to ucip ourseivc*. ?? ncu mv- wuiuj doners' put the question before us, let us vote the tax, and proceed to build the road. Bi? Load of Fodder. Mr. John Kennedy, son of Mr. A. B. Kennedy, of Lone (June, brought to Abbeville last Saturday tne largest load of fodder ever brought to this market. The load consisted of fifteen hundred bundles, weighing twentythree hundred nnd eighty-six pounds, for which he realized335.75, Mr. H. W. Luwson. senior, being the purchaser. When the load made its appeaianee In thedistance. the members of tho loafers' club were struck with amazement, and a full meeting assembled at once to discuss the matter. As it came near-, er nil the faces in town could bo seen iroin me windows and doors of the different houses. Some people Imagined it to ben house, others j thought it was n circus with the tent already aprcad. - To Farmers. We desire to make our pnperof vnluetoonr Agricultural readers, and with this view we solicit from practical farmers, their exnerlnnd opinions relative to anything which ?<II1 tend to improve nnd develop the agrlcul ^ tureof the country. Farming Is a science, nnd skill and Intelligence can accomplish as much in its pursuit ns manual labor. An exchange of Ideas will do much to diffuse these advantages among the masses, nnd we urge upon ourpractical plnntersto come for^ 'Ward, and si ve us their opinions and the re^ ?Suits of their experiments, for publication. Last Monday was Sale Day, nnd there was nn exceedingly large crowd in town on that day. Very little property of any kind was offered, and the stores were crowded all day with persons trading or making arrangements to do so. On the public squaro there was some enquiry for farm hands atenhanced prices, but the suppiy wa?| not equal to the demand. The greatest quantities of gtiauos are being hauled off and extensive preparn lions aro ui'iiik muuv ... ryquarterof the counts. It will take perhaps one-fifth of the crop to pay for the fertilizers which will bo used. Tiiomas P. Cotiikan, Fsy., .acted ns Solicitor at the Anderson Court during the absence of the Solicitor, and tcmj>oiarily discharged the duties of that office in such a manner as lo j elicit very complimentary mention by the A n<lcr?on Journal. \Ve hope that good luck may attend Mr. Cothran in all tho courts?including that of Cupid. Some of us have practiced at the last named bar for a long time with III success, but wo know better fortune awaits the man who is so successful In the j Courts of General Sessions and Common I l'leas. Willis McDnnlel was convicted at Aiken of assault and battery, but as the offence was committed on Ihe 1st of January, issi, II made lilm liable under the provisions of the concealed weapons Act The .Indue, therefore, | sentenced him to three months In the county j Jail for assault and battery, and three months i in the penitentiary, or S2U0 fine for carrying a concealed weaj>on about his person. Thk iron on the Greenwood and Augusta | Railroad has been laid to Quaker Springs, five i mile* this side of Augusta. Tha company now has four hundrei thousand dollars, and j will push the work forward tw an early completion. Tho road will be tin is bed to the river by the first of May. Ooi-okel A. P. We wish these gentlemen a very pleasant time, and only regret that we cannot go with them. The time for killing deer expired last Monday. The time for killing partridges, doves, turkeys and otlx-r feathered game will bo out on the lSth Instant. After that time heavy penalties attach for kllllngthf pune mention ed. Let all persons observe the law. Old men say that a h?rd winter is generally followed by a gf?od fruit crop and good fruit crops are attended with good crops ftf every other kind. 80 far it is admitted on all hands the Indications point to an abundant yield of .fruit for the season approaching. All places where loafers do nio*t congregate were thronged, where the Inauguration of Garfield and other matters of moment were discussed. Richard Gantt, the barber at this place, has finished paying for his dwelling, near the colored Methodist church. In this town. Thl? shows what a little honest Industry and economy can do. DmiNfi the past, two weeks our planters 'have done a great deal of good work on their farms. Yesterday was cloudy, and we may ;yet haveunfavorable weather for farm work. There Is no need for any man or boy to be ldlen.)w. If they oin not get work In the business they like, or are Accustomed to, there Is plenty to be done In tilling the soil. Lightning Itow?.?If you want your house -struck by lightning, just buy one of the trllightning rods that are sometimes ped dled through the country. During the warm spell of wemher quite a number of our gentle?nan had their hair cut short. Tho cold winds of last-week ge.ve all . of them colds. There are four eountics In this State In which no licenses are Issued for the sale ol whisky, viz: Pickens, Laurens, Marlborough and Horry. All of our churches were well filled last Sunday. The ordinance of the Lord s Supper was observed In the Methodist Church. Mr. Jacob Miller says that he will enforce the law againstany one who may entlcc his laborers away from his premises. We sincerelyhone that our farmers will not entirely forgot their corn crop in their am billon to raise a large crop of cotton. The Secretary of the State Mission stated here, in a discourse upon i the subject, that the Haptlst denomination would this year expend ten thousaml dollars In this home mission work, against eight thousand ln*t year. l?r. The settlement was called Greenwood from the luxuriant forest growth by which it was surrounded, ami the na'i c was perpetuated by tlio settlers as it grew npace into the present village. As a matter of deep local interest the readers of the J'-rrM unit Thinner were anxiously looking for the report of the proceedings of thcStolbrand commission; and I can frankly j say that all in this community are profound l.y eniierui ior tail of proceedings furnished through its col-! umns. The I'rcMftnd llanner has preserved a | few pages of local history in Abhevillecounty, j which, however revolting, well pondered i may from the grave lessons taught of radical perjury, .prove a prophecy of good to our , people. <g?? The Public Roads ? Aiken and Stolbrand?A Jilast from "0. I*. H." Editors Press and Manner: Perusing your advertising columns of a late I date I observed a peremptory order subscribed j by the chairman of th'* newly fledged county "powers that be" directing the supervisors of ?Mihiin ik i<vli wi* v? tn>li-v(ili> six (lavs of 'atiorin ! JJUUI.V , repairing them by the tenth of March proximo. I hiive not the remotest desire to throw i a dumper upon the good intentions of our cf-1 flclent public functionaries and I mean no of-1 fence to them by any means in spending my j humble opinion upor.subjects pertaining to'; the "public weal" or woe. I only claim the>( right of opinion. From such an order one' would readily infer that the public roads have I been badly matiHgcd heretofore and are now J ( in a "miserable tlxor the Commissioners'! are going to try to put them in far superior! | condition than they have ever been. IJather ! | a reflection upon the recent retired boaru, hut! perhaps not so intended. I cannot speak ut large as to the state of the roads In the county. Very true,so much "falling weather" in ! the past has made them "'rough and tumble" | < rather inaccessible to wheels, but, ncvcrthe-11 less, I liard.y think there is an absolute uiii- i i versal need prevailing, requiring, you might;* say, six consecutive days of work. I am a j lover of good smooth roads mid I admire the spirit that prompted such an order to be Isan?.t hut. i think extreme measures sl ould tie' guarded anainst, especially, where they have! a direct tendency to contllet with the vital lis-; terest of the tiller of the noil. Time Is pre-j clous and money to the farmer. lie Is the fill- j crum upon which the lever of the living machinery of the world i< kept in perpetual motion and obstructions should be guarded against. Unprecedented amount of protracted inclement weather hasdct< rred him from making much progress ;>s yet in agricultural' ' pursuits and to require litm to s ici ltleesix 1 days all at once up-in the public altar at this! "push time" of the ycir. even if there was ai pressing necessity prevailing, wouid be in- 1 Dieting greater detriment, than iutilnsic ' worth to th?> prosperity of the people. The order is unconditional. Wh^re is the consist- , ency. If a road could be put in ?'?km1 traveling! j repair in one or two days, why consume six days at It? If the requisite number of days was parceled out in "broken doses*' through the year at leizure time', no word of com- , plaint would be made. The laboring class has not time now to make tne roaus assume a i graded or turnpike appearance. I, furthermore, hardly, think this season of the year is 1 un opportune time to work public roads thoroughly. Too much mud. I am presumptlous enough to nmke tlie following suggestion: Let one or two days now be expended In cleaning out the ditches and "patcning" the roads up so that they will answer the public uurpose until "laying by" time (about August,) which Is better in a two-f??ld sense?suits the fanner's time the best and is the best time of the year to work roads. Hope is entertained by lovers of Democratic reign that Stolbrand's ?ttrgoof testimony to dislodge Aiken from his election will be of I no aval'. Aiken's watchful counsel will doubtless spare no efforts In controverting eiery foul evidence that may be gathered up | from ignorant-prejudiced m-groes to defeat j him. Our body pol Itlc ear.not well allord to | lose their able and efficient representative in Congress under false pretcnces. Such an | event would be a calamity to our parly. lie-: publicans North would exult at the idea and! will coutriiiute every means to bring about, such a result. They have learned in the "school of experience" that Aiken is a "formidable adversary" and will not tolerate his j carcass to be "run over" by a set of unprinclpled would-be domineers. He is a terror to! evil-doers and stands, as it were, upon the; I Coneressional pareuet as an impenetrable | | bulwark iu defence of Southern rights. O. 1'. H. j died!
