The witnesses it seems were remarkably Intelligent or. questions which they thought would be damaging to their white neighbors, but never an extenuating circumstaticc did not know. From this latter fact, it is clear that some of them either swore falsely as to the facts or as to their knowledge of the offending party. Without exception tlie negroes denied the reason for t heir organizing into companies on the day of election, when It is a well known fact, and one which we have never heard denied, that t icy do so for the purpose of intimidating the inoretimid of their own race.
