Bonner in his sore iiflliction, we t tract the following paragraph from the i*r byterian, which was written hy Dr. Cirier: in the domestic circle, Mrs. Bonner was true wife and mother. In her relations to s cleiy, she was a most womanly woina Kverywhere she was the sincere Christia Singularly modest and retiring in herdisp sition, she taught the young women of h generation to "love their husbands, to lo their children, to be discreet, chaste, keep*' at home." Su Ject, "Civilization, Ancient and Modern." attempted merely to portray some of Its leai ing characteristics and prominent feature to detlne Its nature, trace Its origin, sket< some of Its earliest developments, contra: some of the leading and essential features Civilization, Ancient and Modern, and 1 show how large a debt Modern Progress ow< to Ancient Civilization. Civilization was defined to be the devclo; mentof two elements?society and the lnd vldual: and progress was shown to be Its e fientlal characteristic. Its origin was traci to the high-lands of Central Asia, and the pr gress of the race attributed not to its own ui aiaeu eriori oui t>> contact wiui a ingner civi i/.at ion. 1 t-K earliest developments anvid tli three great brunches of the Caucasian stoi ?the Aryan, the Semitic anil the liarnit races?were rapidly sketched, and while Or eiit vi civilization wan shown to exhibit snin social progress, yet that it furnished tl verms of Greek and Roman culture, and tin the blending of thevc elements with those the German and the Celtic races produced tl rich fruits of modern culture. The framework of ancient and moderns ciety wm contrasted, and the superiority < the modern in all that gives security to lif 11 l???rty and happiness was clearly showi While the tninsceudent excellence of the Ai ? clents in works of taste and the iniaginutlo was conceded, their recognized inferiority i the useful and mcchunicul arts was advertr to. Tli#obstacle*: which interfere with the col utruetlon of a science of sociology were poin <h1 out, and the heresies of Ituckle and othei of thitt school attempted to be exposal. 'Die essay concluded with a hopolul view < the operation of those essential and imperial able agencies which furnish the guarantees i the onward march of civilization. The discussion which followed was execet inuly interesting, and we are sorry that v eanuot give a synopsis of the whole. Xe: week we hope to publish the lull text of tl essay. M. P.
