Jennings, the energetic agent of this sterling daily arid ' weekly journal. Tho Cfiruniclc and Constitutionalist hag long been a necessity at the Press and Banner otllce, and k mny high praise which we would now bestow on that paper which was tirst to urge South Carolina to the political I course that brought her deliverance I would be only to repeat something that I we have said before. As early as 1875 that paper, with an ability and boldness Hfcc that was not without effect, urged us to | strike trom our limbs the shackles ' ?"'"I- ""nil n? nnH tn nnnn nr<i wo more indebted for our triumphs in 1876. Always manly, high-toned and honora| hie, alike to friend and foe, the energy and skill displayed in tiio general makeup of the paper cannot fail to commend itself to our citizens. Religious Meeting. Rev. A. CokeSmith.of Greonville, delivered an excellent sermon in the Methodist church last Monday night. Large crowds are in attendance upon the daily meeting for divine worship in the Methodist church for the past two weeks, and many souls have been hopefully converted. The additions to the church number about fifteen. Others aro expected to join before the meeting breaks up. We are not advised as to the length of time tho meeting will continue but presume that it will be prolonged until next Sunday. Rev. Mr. Martin preached a most acceptnble sermon to a full house last Sunday night. Christians of all denominations have been attending these meetings and are in sympathy with the tForts of the Methodist*brethren in their labor for the advancement of tho Redeemer's kingdom. A good essay and a pleasant meeting are in store for the members of the Club. Wu take the following notice from the lim number of the Christian Union. It is indeed a good paper?one of the verv published in New York. Send two dollars and pet a copy one year. That paper says: The Christian Union >:oos to its readers thia week in a partially new draw; the contributed articles, sermon, and indeed, tne great body of the paper appearing in a new type. One motto of , the Chrwiian Union is mnltum in purvo. It is our constant endeauor to compact a great deal wito a little space; to give our readers more short articles, more short paragraphs, more information, with more telegraphic brevity. Address "Christian Union," New York. Tick Quitman Stab.?This is the ti-1 tie of a whII gotten up and neatly printed newspaper .just started at Quitman, tia., by Mr. R. II. Martin, formerly a typo, of Abbeville. Mr. Martin's pa'per is worthy of a good support and we have 110 doubt hia energy and skill will bring him the merited success^n his new field r of labor. We take great pleasure in entering the Star on our exchange list, and in extending our best wishes for the sitecess of so good a man. The WinnsbokoNews and Herald. ?We are glad to observe the progressive spirit and the recent improvement and onlargoment of the Wtnnnooro News and HerultL It has always been one of our best exchanges, and now the editor has reduced the sizo of his type and prints the inside on an excellent "patent outside." The News and Herald is a bold and honest paper, that should be taken bv overy family in the county for which it is printed. The bachelor editor of the Press and Banner yesterday was the recipient of the most beautiful bouquet of modest little flowers that ever graced an oditor's ' able. We are glad to note that the town council subscribed 1*25.00 for this charitable purpose. Let subscriptions go from every town. Did you ever notice the poor chap that stands in tbe first picture of the almanac with a fish, and sheep, and scorpions, and bulls and twins, etc., around him? Tukre soems to be a great temperance movement on foot throughout a great . portion of the State. At Abbeville, espevially, there seems to be a great awakencning on the subject. All the ministers, white and colored, are warm advocates of tho movement, which seemB to be gaining wonderful strength. The sonti'd of the church-going bell is now heiyd in Abbeville every forenoon ^ and nigh*, and large numbers of our * people attend the revival services in tbe Methodist church. The evening meeting is usually crowded, and great interest is manueatea Dy tue entire community. Mr. Moore, a fruit tree dealer from Tennesrjee, recently bought a horse from Mr. G. W. This is just what we have expected would bo done sooner or later. The idea that it was good to put an old I pump into a well to mould and rot has , jleng since exploded. We shall now get i ! good fresh water from the well instead | of a liquid resembling stump-water. j Thk preliminary mooting of tho pro- : posed Teachers' Institute for Abbeville county will be held in the Court House on Saturday week, May 10, at elevon | o'clock.
