j The Press and Banner.! Wednesday, Nov. 29,1876. j The Abbeville Amateur Theatricals.! Ox the evening of Thursday, last week tlie Abbeville Amateur Thespian j Corps gave an interesting entertainment in the Court House to a large j audience of spectators from the town ; and country, with the following cast) of characters in the pla3*of "THE PEOPLE'S LAWYER." Robert Howard, the People's Lawyer?S. CCason. Hugh Wlnslow, a merchant?Dr. J. S. Thompson. Shingle, a Country Teamster?J. A. Calhoun. , Charles Otis, a Clerk?M. P. DeBruhl. John Ellsley, aHerk?Dr. H. 1>. Wilson. Tripper, an Attorney at Law?T. M. Galphin. I Judsje of the Cour*?W. T. Branch. Kherilf of the Court?A. W. Jones, John, a Porter?E. L. Wilson. Timid, a Lawyer?A.. J. Chalmers. Jurymen and Police Officers?Company. I Miss Grace Otis?Miss Minnie Lomax. Mrs. Otis?J/iss Kate Calhoun. After which we had some excellent! music from the string band, and then followed the excellent rendition of the Farce of "d'ye kxow me now?" with the following impersonations: Julioz SDiirsrius?A. W. Jones. Jolly, a Commercial Traveller?.V. P. Pe-i Bruhl, % Nogo Duuks?T. M. Galphin. Samuel Watewell?J. A. Calhoun. Clerks, &c?Company. In the plays each character was performed in a manner quite creditable, "but we will be pardoned if we mention the attraction imparted to the whole by the presence of tlje young! maies. i MISS KATE CAI.UOUX acted the purl of the old ladv with! such a grace as to make her appearj even as 11?vols* in the assumed charae-j ter of the aged matron as she is charm-1 ing in the real charaeterof the nonpa-j reil maiden. The 'pcrsonelle and! bearing of MISS MINNIE I.OMAX on the stage were perfect and faultless ji and she performed her nice part in theh portrayal of heroism and deep feeling j at a brother's apparent misfortune,ji with a delicacy and modesty which I: reflected the beautiful character ofli the handsome young lady. j< DK. J. Si. THOMPSON, < as Hugh Winslow. the pot\ipous pier- ! chant, acted finely his part throughout and especially in his efFort to in- ' duce MR. M. P. DEBKUHL, ( as Charles Otis, the clerk, to testify falsely. The merchant, upon the i Clerk's refusal to comply with his I request, dismissed him from the store. : Charles resisted bis approaches in a manner which enlisted the sympathy I -f tiw.n.wiionno ?s u-ell hm thoiradmira- ; t?I tllC(lUUlVUvv,*v - v.. 7 7 tion for his inflexible character. He was afterwards arrested as the result of a deep laid scheme upon the part of the merchant w:th the assistance of DR. H. I>. WILSON* as John Ellsley, a brother clerk, who exhibited to Charles Otis his employer's watch and chain which he admit- i ted that he had stolen, and upon Charles refusing to keep the watch forhitn, he?petningly repented of his crime, and requested Charles to write i for him to his employer an acknowledgment of his fault, which Charles readily consented to do, and while in the act of writing, Ellsley slipped the , watch and chain into Charles' pocket. When the copy of the confession was finished he asked Charles to put it in . his pocket until he would return. , After Dr. Wilson had accomplished this sleight of hand performance with the dexterity of the mngieinn, he left, i ??wl i in* officers of the law soon had the I merchant's victim in their clutches. i MH. T. M. GALPHIX 1 appeared in Court as prosecuting at- j torney, and the self complacency and J assumed dignity of the Major were excellent. The proof of the prisoners guilt was conclusive at the time, but for the appearance of ; MR. K. c. OASON as Robert Howard, the People's Lawyer, and hero of- the story, wiio claim ed to he heard in behalf of the prison- , er. Jiy his adroitness in examining 1 the states' witnesses he proved from i tlietn clearly the innocence of his client and the guilt of John Ellsley and the merchant. Charles was acquitted and Che People's Lawyer received the ' hand of Grace, the sister of the defendant, as his fee for his legal sorvi- 1 ces. MR. JOIfN A. CALHOUN, as a teamster, amused the audience throughout the play with the inimita- , ble manner in which he performed his part. MR. A. J. CHALMERS made his first appearance that night as a lawyer, and if he progresses a* his start indicates, will yet w in distinction. MR. A. \V. .TONES never falls to plea*e ami interest, and | whatever he does is su%i* i<> he worthy of tin-occasion and the man. MR. E. Ji. WILSON deserves especial mention tor the excellent manner in which he performed his part. His efforts on the sta<re. like his labors off the stage, were en tiri-iy sueeessitu. Rev. II. F." Vorter. This sleek-tongurd anil- meek-evedi enemy of peace, truth and just ice al'le: j stirrin.* 114) an much ill-feeling as possible between his neighbors at Cokes-1 bury, seems to be as wise as the serpent as he knew exactly when to take himself (o other fields of usefulness, and thus avert the impending doom which awaited his return from Abbeville. The good people of Cokesbury knew not at that time the exte'nt of his offending, but were satisfied that this carpet-bag negro from Massachusette who sought to represent this county iu the Legislature needed their respects, and it is reported that a number of persons contemplated making the atmosphere pretty hot for him, hut he failed to come home. When he does conie he ought to bring half a dozen soldiers with him for company. We learn that this preacher is now looking after the welfare (?) of our Newberry brethren. We think he will not be likely to disturb this community much more. XV. H. Heard, of Georgia. Various reports are in circulation respecting this Georgia negro who wanted to represent us in the Legislature at its present sitting. One is to the effect that he has been killed, and a hundred other stories with all the different shades which each reader may please to give his report. We are informed by a reliable gentleman from Lowndesville that this negro was carried over Savannah River at Harper's Ferry in this county one morning last week about sunrise in charge of several men whom the Ferryman did not know, and it is said that he is an es caped convict from Georgia and that these men were currying him back to receive a just punishment for some crime committed in that State. We know nothing of the fact of the reports in reference to his being killed or taken off. If any of our friends know the truth of this matter we will thank them to give it to us for publication. P. S. Since writing the above we learn that he is in Columbia resting safely in the arms of Daniel. The Legislature. As will bo seen from despatches in another column, United States troops have surrounded the State House, and upon the exclusion of the Laurens and Edge hold Democratic members the Lower House withdrew from the State House! before any organization was effected, and j subsequently assembled in Military I hill where an organization whs concluded. With this arrangement legislation at the capital is at a standstill, as the Senate will probably refuse to recognize the Democratic organization of the House of Representatives. No business of any kind can be done for the present, and we prepumt' the most that they can do is to meet and adjourn from day* to day until tho organization is agreea upon. The Government at Washington seems determined to keep Chamberlain in office, but the Democrats aro confident of being able to inaugurate the lawfully elected Governor. A coiiOKKD boy a boot l!) years of age was captured and confined in jail yesterday for breaking into the dwell-! ing of Mr. Niekles near IVJcKay'sj Mills. He was caught iu the act, and J as he was running eight nhots were tired at him, and he was slightly wounded. Iiy referring to the records! of the Court we find that during the last three years 40 persons have been sentenced to the penitentiary from this j County, and out [of this .4f>, 41 were were colored ; out of this 14 40 were sentenced for grand larceny.
