Tne State Grund Lodge, No. 4, of ie Independent Order of Good Sam aritans and Daughters of Samaria in merion, met in the city of Beaufort in 117. It was at that Grand Lodge aes on that they voted to purchase in olumbia that valuable piece of prop *ty on the south side of Washington :reet, which was built and owned innerly by Tom Jackson, the black tnith. The price paid for this valu ble property was $17,500, and it was andled by the L. A. Hawkins real state agency. The writer visited Mr. Hawkins' ot ee on Washington street a few days go and he showed me the bond and ?ortgage, the same being duly satis ed in the clerk of court's office at he court house. The Go^d Samari ans wiped out this debj. in three ears, and they deserve to bo congrat dated for their magnificent achieve nent. The grand officers who led the Drder on to victory are. Mr. T. W. Brown, Worthy Grand Chief; Mr. D. 3. Green is the Grand Secretary, and Mr, A. Hyman Treasurer. The building is a substantial brick building with three stores on the ground floor, and eleven roo-.is up stairs. I understand that the owners of the property contemplate remodel ing the building later and putting on another story. It now has a rental value of $180.00 per month, and the Hawkins Agency bas the building in charge, and collects .the rent. At present the headquarters of the Order is in Charleston, but when the build lng is remodeled, their general offices may be returned to Columbia. Benedict College. On the invitation of the authorities of Benedict college the Interdenomina tional Ministers' Union held a session laBt Tuesday in the library building Rev. D. F. Thompson, the president, presided, and Rev. J. F. Green read the minutes. President B. W. Valen tine, of Benedict, in a few remarks, welcomed the union to the college, and asked them to come any time they could make it convenient. The pas tors of the city who constitute the union were there in full force. Mr. A Charles L. Arbouin, presidnet of the Union of Benedict College, composed of theological students, also spoke words of welcome to the city union. The Dean of the Theological Depart ment, too, made us welcome. His name is the Rev. Mr. C. B. Antisdel. The preacher for the day was the Rev. H. M. Moore, D. D., the pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church. His text was: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that belleveth.'' The preacher also dwelt upon the ?preceding verse at length.
