Tne Slate Grand Lodge, No. 4, of e Independent Order ol Good Sa. nritans and Daughters ol' Samaria in merion, met in thu city of Beaufort in 17. lt was at that Grand Lodge aes on that they voted to purchase in I jlumbia that valuable piece of prop-/ ty on the south side of Washington J reel, which was built and owned; rmorly by Tom Jackson, the black nith. The price paid Tor this valu )le property was $17,500, and it was indled by the L. A. Hawkins real j ?tate agency. The writer visited Mr. Hawkins' oi se on Washington street a few days' 50 and he showed me the bond and, lortgage, the same being duly satis ed io the clerk of court's office at| ie court house. The Good Samari ums wiped out this dc bj. in three, ears, and they deserve to he congrat-j lated for their magnificent achieve-1 lent The grand officers who led the >rder on to victory are. Mr. T. The building is a substantial brick' milding with three stores on the ground tloor, and eleven rooms up stairs. I understand that the owners af the property contemplate remodel ing the building later and putting on another story, lt now has a rental value of $1S0.00 per month, and the Hawkins Agency has the building in charge, and collects .the rent. On the invitation of the authorities of Benedict college the Interdenomina tional Ministers' Union held a session last Tuesday in the library building. Rev. I). F. Thompson, the president, presided, and Rev. J. F. Green read the minutes. President B. W. Valen tine, of Benedict, in a few remarks, welcomed the union to the college, and asked them to come any time they could make it convenient. The pas tors ol' the city who constitute the union were there in full force. Mr. A. Charles L. Arbouin, presi'dnet of the Union of Benedict College, composed of theological students, also spoke words of welcome to the city union. The Dean of the Theological Depart ment, too, made us welcome. His name is the Rev. Mr. C. B. Antisdel. The preacher for the day was the Rev. H. M. Moore, D. D., the pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church His text was: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is thc power of God unto salvation to ever j one that believeth.*' The preacher also dwelt upon th< preceding verse at length. The ser mon was able, instructive and spirit ual. Dr. Moore is one of the brightes jewels Benedict has sent out. He i an honor to his alma mater. There i a bright future before him. Benedict has just closed the exe cises of her week of prayer. D Moore conducted them, preaching t the faculty and students twice a da; Several students made a decision I become disciples of the Master, ar to follow Him, The Theological Department. The writer remembers very w? when this department had only oi teacher, and just a handful of st dents, who were preparing themselv for the ministry, but on Tuesday I w amazed at What I saw. That lar room in the library and the hall w were packed with young ministers, does seem to me tt?t the handful 1 become a large company. There ? more or less 50 or 60 theological s lents in Benedict. The crowd was great until they had to bring in ex seats. The faculty has increased fr one professor to four. They are: I? T. G. Brownson, Rev. C. B. Antisi Rev. D. F. Thompson and Rev. Lee. The last named gentleman been connected with this departm for several years, and its rapid gro to its prsent large proportions is more to Dr. R. F. Lee than to other one person. He spends his cations advertising this departn and in .persuading young men who looking toward the ministry to c to Benedict and study, and they 1 come in larger number than t They are doing a great work.
