POETRY. omMPhese^vE. FROM Til PERSIAN* Why was this spirit, ardent still to rise, Chained in a dungeon of compacted clay ? Why were those thoughts, aspiring to the skies, - - In heavy fetters doomed to pine away I 8trange-.-nr>ystic union of discordant things, Beyond the powers of reason to descry: Like the wild Ostrich of the waste, whose wings, Tho* strongly nerved, yet are not formed ( 4o fly. Q sluggish Clay, that bendst thy Inmate - down, Low to the Parent Dust <that gave thee Wrtli I ljtain would spurn thee, all thy tics disown, And roam m Pilgrim from the realms of earth. Koam where ??What unknown worlds wouldst thou explore ? Who e rest in boundless space thy weary flight ? FJoat o'er ethereal oceans without shore, Mount to the stars-or sink in endless nighu What it thine aim! what nighty object, say, To rise above this suhltmarf sphere ? _ E'en Him, who reigns o'er all the realm of day, .-Say does thou feek ? *vain man ! then seek him here. For his Almighty wisdom, power a*d love, Are (neither circumscribed by time, nor space, But perfect here as in the realms abqve, Sustain the Myriads of the human race. Extract from the Managers of the Philadelphia Aux iliary Bible Society, presented Jan. if 18i* " There is an eventful period. A ww era Kan commenced in the hfoto^ rv of the Church. A light has aris en which shall shine mote and more unto the perfect da} : an impulse has t>een given to Christian feeling which cannot he checked. The Christian ?world is taginning to arouse from its longjirotacted sluml>er,to strain every nerve and exert all its latent energies ?to accomplish the |iredicted destinies of the Church. The prayers4 #f millions funcend day and night to the throne of the Eternal, that lie would take to himaelf his great power and reign. Hveiy distinction it rank, of party and of sed, is merged in the ithnracter of the Christian philan thropist. Tlie |>easant of Siberia, who is honght and sold with die soil lie cultivates, contributes of his scan ty means; while he who wears the crown '? of aV the Russians" pours forth the ftreartjres of his royal iwiui finer nee. u And shall we alone he inactive and supine, while others are abound ing in the work of the Lord) Shall t^is Society, tlie first Auxiliary to the first liible Society m America, suffer iuelf to he cast into the shade by institutions which have sprung up since it has attained its maturity t Shall immortal souls he sinking down around us to everlasting death, for want of knowledge which we pos sess, and which it has become our duly to impart ? All that is blessed ' in Tumi an l>enevolei?ce?all that is holy in Christian charity cries out against it There is no motive w liich can be addressed to a rational and accountable being, which does not come hotfie with irresistilde force to our cdnsolencflp* Tlie glory of God, the salvatipn of souls, our own pence of mind, and spiritual welfare?all urge us forward. 4* l^et us determine then renewed* ly to devote our energies to the suc cess of this cause. "Let us beseech the Fathct of Lights, that he w(*ld quicken our zeal, direct our efforts, and crown thein with success. JLet us earnestly 'I implore him who nays u the silver and gold are mine," that be would dispose those whom he has made the < stewards of his bounty to contribute liberally of their substance towards the universal diffusion of this best of gifts. And never let us forget that* the Disposer of all events can give ef ficacy to the feeblest exertions; whilst the most strenuous efforts without His divine blessing must prove utter ly unavailing. " But whilst lamenting our own J unfruitfuluess, we must omi forget to rejoice at what has been done and is still doing in the world. We see the dawn of that glorious period, when " the light of the moou shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days." We see the champions of (be cross, pene trating iuto the very heart of Satan's dark domains; and with no other weapon thi>n the .Sword of the Spi rit, and with no tidier defence than tins Shield of Vaith, vanquishing the powers of darkness, and under minding the bulwarks of pagan idol atiy." " How would the hearts of our pi ous ancestors have swelled with transport, had they been able to an ticipate with certainty, that so early as the begiuing of the nineteenth century, the word that bringeth sal vatiou should be read aud heard by nations of whose very existence they were almost ignorant. ? Scarce fourteen vears have elap sed since the simple expedient of distributing the word of God gratui tously, without note *or comment, was proposed to the christian world; and already our eyes behold the most stupendous results. Mas^y have run to aqd fro, and knowledge has in creased. The peace of God which passeth understanding, and charity that thinketh no evil,- now cheer and actuate those whose hearts conceived only mischief, and whose hands were staiued with blood. # u Soon may that day arrive, when ignorance aud error, and superstition shall flee away before the brightness of the rising of tL? Sun of Hight eousuess, w hen that sacred volume, which it should be uiir highest ambi tion to disseminata, shall be hailed as the pillar of cloud by day ami pillar of fire by night, to guide a benighted world in the paths of safety tud of peace."
