FROM Til PERSIAN*
Why was this spirit, ardent still to rise,
Chained in a dungeon of compacted clay ?
Why were those thoughts, aspiring to the
skies,
- - In heavy fetters doomed to pine away I
8trange-.-nr>ystic union of discordant things,
Beyond the powers of reason to descry:
Like the wild Ostrich of the waste, whose
wings,
Tho* strongly nerved, yet are not formed (

Q sluggish Clay, that bendst thy Inmate

Low to the Parent Dust <that gave thee

ljtain would spurn thee, all thy tics disown,
And roam m Pilgrim from the realms of
earth.
Koam where ??What unknown worlds
wouldst thou explore ?
Who e rest in boundless space thy weary
flight ?
FJoat o'er ethereal oceans without shore,
Mount to the stars-or sink in endless
nighu
What it thine aim! what nighty object,
say,
To rise above this suhltmarf sphere ? _
E'en Him, who reigns o'er all the realm
of day,
.-Say does thou feek ? *vain man ! then seek
him here.
For his Almighty wisdom, power a*d love,
