SATURDAY. DFC. 12, 1909. BACK YARD REFORM. We were "in hopes" that Koch Hill could manage to get along without us at least until atter the Christmas holidays, but it seems that we must rush right in again to the aid of our esteemeji contemporaries over there. "A Citizen," who has been ^strolling around the dil lerent. streets in Itock Hill," makes the startling announcement iu Wednesday's issue of the Hetald that the "back yards" are "full of all kinds ot unsightly things"?"old boxed, barrels, cans and trash of every conceiv able kind/' Aud reference is also made to "old torn-down fences, palings off, and old outbuildings unrepaired and gone to rack."' "If," says the writer, referring to the back yards, "it is impossible to keep them clean, build a closed fence I igh enouirh to shut out the view of visitors to our city.'' We quote further from the aforesaid correspondent: "You see ou every hand unsightly poles with all manner of bill posters and varied ads on them, old fences all covered with them. I ask the people of Rock Ilill if they do not agree with me that we need a tremendous effort here to reform along this line." You are certainly right, Mr. Citizen, a "tremendous effort" at back yard reform is needed, and it must, by all means be ma e before the arrival of ttie gladsome yuletide. We musn't let Santa Claus come and find the 'possum city in such a disgraceful condition as you so graphi call}*, and no doubt correctly, describe. It will be recalled that old "Santy" had to go around Rock IJill last Christmas, ou account of the impassable ? ? imrtHioles, <?nd it will never do to disappoint the numerou - little .4- I I siucf in nangers again this year, which fate surely awaits 'em if the insurmountable and unsightly obstructions you refer !o are not removed out of Santa Claus's way,. The job looks big, but, you know, you Rock Hillians have heroically undertaken and sue cessfully accomplished greater things than cleaning up your filthy back yards. You didn't think, for enmple, that you could ever get Uhed to water, bui you now see how rapidly, in puituance ot our repeated advice, you are acquiring the battling habit. So let all hands get busy preparing for a thorough washin* and a general cleaning up foi Christmas. What to do with your old rubbish?tin cans, barrels, boxes, etc.? Why, get the Southern railway to haul 'em off and dump 'em into Chester's hundreds of bottomle-s ' builditif lois." Apropos ot back yards, it might tie well for Lancastrianto take a look at their piemi-es There may possibL be kom> stray trash about here that might be donated Chester. Let. us have everything looking "spick and span" for Christmas. If one or those K<>ck Uillians should happen to come over here during the holidays and see just one old tin can, we'd never hear the last of it. When asked what's the news, a day or two ago, a member ol the city council replied: "Well,! Fort Lawn has electric lights.' !
