The Lancaster News LEDGER 18b/ REVIEW 187# ENTERPRISE 1891 VOL. 4. NO. 9. SEMI-WEEKLY. LANCASTER, S. C., OCTOBER 31, 1908. PRICE 5 CENTS PER COPY Report of Meeting of A. R. I P. Presbytery Held at Gil- | ead, Mecklenburg Co., N. c. , Rev. 0. Young and Elders 1 N. P. Robinson and J. D. Nisbel returned Thureday from the 1 meeting of the A. R P. Presby- ' tery held in Mecklenburg Co., N < C. Judge Ira B. Jones, who i was also a delegate, went on to i Columbia. 1 The meeting was well attend- j ed and the reports, with very < lew exceptions, from the church- i ea were encouraging in growth i and progress. Only rix church. I es out ot 35 or 40 failed to re- < spoud in full to all the calls of l the church for the Home and ' Foreign Mission Funds, pastor's ( salary, etc. All of t he Lancaster i churches had a clean sheet on 1 this score. I Harmony prevailed in all the I churchea except the 1st church < in Charlotte. An unfortunate ciif- I ficulty exists there between the 1 pastor and a part of the congre- < gation. The pastor tendered his resignation, but the majoril) 1 ot the congregation refused to < acquiesoo in his request. A com- 1 mission was appointed by Pres- ( bytery to inquire into the tacts i in the case and present their re i port to an adjourned meeting ol 1 Presbytery to be held in Char lotteon Nov. 17th, when final < action will be taken. I III the meantime a peliiion < was granted tor the organization ( of a new church in the Dilworlh section of the city. This makes I the filth A. R P. church in the ' city. < Two calls were presented from 1 vacant churches. It is likely t that both will be accepted and J pastors installed soon, as follows: Kev J. W. Simpson at Concord i and Rev R. A. Young at King's ( Mountain, N. C. I Petitions lor moderation of f calls were granted lor Yorkville, * and a>so lor Lancaster and SIin loh congregations. 1 The discussion of the tithe question occupied considerable r, time, but facta show that sen'imen* iu favor ol this plan is strong and growing in tins Presbyten and throughout the church. :i i The following paper was pre a sented by the representative < I ( the Lancaster congregation, t Judge Jones, in relation to the i recent action oi Pre-byiery in s regard to the Lancaster and Shi- t loli congregations : r "At a meeting of the Lancas- a ter A. R. P. Congregation held j Oct 25, 1908, the following res > r lutions wete unanimously adopt ed : Resolved: 1. With pain and surprise we have read in the minutes ot call- 1 ed meeting of Presbytery held u at Charlotte, N C., Sept. 18, 1, 1908, the following in connec- b tion wi'h the dissolution of pas- * tori ?1 relations bet ween Rev O. v W. Carmichael and the Lsncas- e ter and Shiloh congregations: H 'That, the Presbytery take occasion to remind these oongrega- ^ tions that tbey have not proceeded according to Presbyterian law and usage, and have overstepped .1 the bounds ot their prerogatives a in presuming to 'terminate1 by t their own action, the relation ex- 8 istmg between pastor and peo- * pie, and further we remind all it congregations under our super r vision that the matter of dis- a solving pat toral relations is the .4 work of the Presbytery and not j of the Congregation." e< 2. That it was beyond the juris- si x diction ol Presbytery to thus nub- hi ? ject these congregations to pub- '1 i!C censure, because no notice or D opportunity to be heard wa- giv?n the congregations, and such! action whs not within the pur . poses lor which said Presbytery ^ei was called together. an 3. That the action ot' Presbytery al' yvus not warranted by the f.?ctp, to which in substance are, that the Se Congregation held a meeting and 'ie adopted resolutions expressiug Is sense that the pastoral rela- th liions should be dissolved and 'h joining with the pastor in a re b juest to Presbytery that such relations be dissolved. These Pc resolutions were duly submitted a o iresoytery and the minutes ol nf said Presbytery show that the nH paster tendered his resignation an to the Presbytery and that "resolutions from Lancaster and Shiloh were read acquiescing in m the request." Upon these facts this Congregation maintains be that it ac'ed in spirit and sub Pr 'tance according to Presbyterian "r law and usage and acted entire 11' ly within its prerogatives as a ev :ongreeation. oa 4'h That our delegate to I Presbytery to meet at Gilead, N. in J. Oct. 27, 1908, is instructed to 8,1 3riny; thi- matter to the attention jf Presbytery to the end that ^8I said censure be revoked and an nulled in fairness and jus ice to Ci iiie congregations concerned." tlc The paper was referred to the 8e jommittee on overtures winch pi wrought iu report. I am wiring to urge you to call upon the voters of your sta'e to be activ ? and to appeal to those in strong democratic sections to bring out the full democratic vote so that a big majority of the popular vote will help to secure the leform legislation to which our party is committed. A big ma. jorit.v iu your state will help the Democratic came everywhere. Please leave no effort unused to get out the lull Democra'io vo'e in \ our state. Appeal to the democaiic papers which have done so much in this eompaign to aid in this work. Norman E. Mack. This is probably a copy ot a dispa'ch which has been sent to every state in the union and while it may not appear important in South Carolina oving to the peculiar conditions here, I desire to have the democratic papers of the state give the widest publicty to this appeal and to urge our people to go to the polls on election day, November 3rd., and cast their ballots for the democratic ticaet just as though we had an active contest on hand and were in doubt about the result. It is 'he stock ot trade of agitators like Crumpacker aud Keifer who urge our reduction in the electoral college and House ot Represeuta ives to point to the small number of votes cast in t ie legal election in the South. Ol course with our primary system the u ual leelitig is that we have setihd our politics in that election, bur I nutTl I I tluloao 1 1\Q Ottlontio.. - i uv?* i ivoi ? uo oncvn?ni w | U Li l nominees does not absolve us from the obligation to give tho e nominees a lull v de, and I beg that every democrat will take the time and trouble necessary to do lh:s next Tuesday. The oath to support the nominees of the party creates an obligation which as honorable men and pa'riots w-* should fulfil.
