Big Sensation--Sherman is , Charged With Being Party to Big Land Fraud. Kditorinl Correspondence of the Columbia Stat?. Nov York, Oct. *J)i.?The World sprung the sensation of tlio campaign this morning when it devoted two and a half pages to exposing tin- connection of James S. Sherman. lU-pultlican vine presidential candidate, with a land company that proposed to secure a great block of public land from New Mexico at .'t to 5 per cent, of it,s value. The company lirst planned to buy liO.uuo acres by means of ''dummy', applications tor liiO acres each. Workers in a Milwaukee brewery were the dummies. Hut the promoters became alarmed and decided to (jot congress to permit Nt?u Mi'vicn Tnrrili??-u - - ?* nn/l acre blocks. Sherman, general attorney for the land company, drew and introduced the hill. It passed the house and was only held up in the Senate by one objector. Patterson of <'olorado. Futile efforts have been made today to yet the Associated Press to carry the story. The World management assured me today they bad documentary proof for everything printed and that it could be inspected. Sherman refuses to make a statement. The papers containing the story that went to news stands in I'tiea, Sherman's home, were bought up and destroyed. The Tal't papers say not a word. No party has ever had a more despicable "deal" from the press of America than the Democratic party is now expe' icncing. "If we only had the money to do the urgent publicity work." is the exclamation at Democratic headquarters. An expansive smile visited Herman Kidder's tact? today when I handed him another $1,000, making something more than $7,oOO contributed by South t'arolinians to The State's campaign fund. If our people realized how great is the need, not a Democrat would withhold his contribution \V. K. t ion /ales. Will Take to Tall Timber on Rock Hill's "Wash" Day. From the P.ovk Mill Herald.
