V , 2 Agricultural ^ Department j,'^ " the Kill Smut in Your Grain ly With Formaldehyde. 11513 W. B. Harris in the Progressive Far- | 8 the As wheat seeding time is hi a})) hand I'll give you our methods ol | treating wheat and oatH for smut. ^ Very lew ol our farmers use bluestone, yet 1 presume most (o farmers in your territory ?re . I ami liar with it. So I'll couiine ^ , myself to the formahu or form 4U aldehyde treatment. Some dip tire bags ol grain in t|(( the solution and then set them t out on a dripping board Some . j pour the grain out the floor and SQ sprinkle the solution on with sprinkling pot and stir with gt scoop, bu< the method I lind to be mot-t effective, is to make a g solutiou ol one pound ol formal- u dehyde to 40 to 50 gallons of VQ water. Put eight or ten gallons in a big trough with one end elevated so that the solution ?p| will all be at the other end. Pour the grain into this solution and stir with shovel or grain to scoop until thoroughly wet. Then pu-li it up to the other end jaj of trough When ttie trough is (u full cover it up with sacks or old blankets and let it stand lor one |(1 hour. Put in bags and set them j)r out so that they will not f>u ch f( and by next day it will be dry enough to sow cu Don't use the solution strong 1<a er than one pound to forty gal njua i use iii)' water (,r ing trough, which holds about m twenty bushels. So 1 can treat )t twenty bushels an hour. Form ri aldehyde is poison, but if you rinse out the trough no barm will ,)e come to the stock. My reason 8I for covering up wit h heavy covers in trough is lound in the fact that formaldehyde is a stas run m into water lor convenience in handling. Now in drying, this gas naturally escapes. It it is contined in the trough it will en- ()? ter the cricks ami whiskers of H the grains ot wheat, llighi here is where the blue stone treat- s(. ment falls down. It is next to * ' impossible to wet these whiskers and cracks in tlie wheat with s(, bluestone solution. Formaldehyde c sts forty cents a pound by die single pound and when we buy it by the gallon it conies at a considerable less mi . figure. Forty gallons ol solution is U?
