New^York, Sept. 30.?A new phase of the discussion of the socalled "Standard Oil correspondnnnn H *v* .. .. L I . - 1 1 1 ? ivo) iu?uc (iuuiic reoeui ly Dy William K. Hearst, was entered upon late today, when .lohn D. Archbold, vice president of the Standard Oil company, made a statement to the Associated Press setting forth details of the alleged theft of correspondence from his files. Former United States Senator John Lowndes McLaurin of South Carolina also entered the field with a signed statement declaring his attitude ^ iu the matter of the coirespond y \ ence between himselt and Mr. > _ ) Arch bold. Mr. Archbold said: "In response to many inquiries as to the theft of letters from my files the following may bo made known: ''Over three years aeo a report reached me that certain of my letters had been offered for sale to a newspaper of this city, ostPllniKlv sfrtloM lof tnro I, V n ,vi j .^v>w.a. *' ' Ckil'" ination showed that Fomo letters were missing anil that they could only have been taken bv some * # one not only familiar with the oflice details, but highly trusted. The party on whom suspicion fell stoutly denied all guilt. A little later, however, a man who represented himself as acting Cv between the thief and those to whom the letters had been sold proposed to return some of the letters lor a consideration, llis story was that the idea of the theft had been conceived by his > brother, who had at one time 4 been in the company's employ, and that this brother had induced the employe already suspected to accept the theft. According to the g -betwoen's story lie had disposed of Hie letters, or some of them, to two men, who purchased them on behall ot Mr. Heurst's newspaper, The JourV nal. Nol only had stolen letters been thus traded for, but the thief was induced to carry off one or more letter copying books, many of whose pages he claims were photographed, other pages being removed altogether. The books in question were, the go-between said, returned after 48 hours. It is impossible to say how many were stolen and sold in this way. The thiovee wc rked at their leisure. MK. MCLAURIN's STATEMENT. Mr. McLaurin, who has just reached New York, gave out f signed statement, in part as folJ\ f lows : "An effort has been made tc create a political sensation by tho publication of certain correspondence b tweeu Mr. Johi Archbold, vice president of the Standard Oil company, and my self.
