Smith sets the nomination of the Democratic party for the United States so nate with a total of 69,318 over his opponent, John Cary Evans, who received 39,655. The ma jority in round numbers is 30 000. This is tiie greatest land slide and m >st overwhelming defeat ever known in this State. Mr John E. Swearingen gets the nomination tor the position of State superintendent o! education by 61,288 to 48,291 for 1118 worthy opponent, Mr. Stiles R. Mellichamp, the majority beins 12,999. But the moat exciting finish ol r all was that 111 the race tor railroad commissioner. In this B. L. Caughman of Saluda was nominated by a majority ol less than 8 <0 out ot 110,00r votes.
