Organization of the Alumni Suggeste4j?Value orthe%andv; Book pf South Carolina-*- { "At tljp French Ball" in the | Capital City?Other Mat- . ters dt Interest. < Written for The Lancaster News by. ' "Lancaster Boy." I Hyatt Park, Columbia, Sept. i 5.?Another summer nearly ^ gone, afiolher autumn approach- ( ing. "Time and tide wait on no man," but do not many men 1 wait on time aud tide? Ere The 1 Lancaster News is once more in 4 the hands ot its many readers 4 the city schools of old Lancaster ' will again have thrown its doors open to the children of Lancaster 1 and vicinity. My! we'll miss the ^ ringing of "the bell that hangs in the tree." We will miss see- ^ ing our lriends, tor school is a * reunion of children and teachers ' and there is a social leature as ' well as a "teachin' and larnin' feature." vVe are sorry not to ] be in the school again, and we 1 wish the schools ol the grand old 1 city, Lancaster, much prosperity 1 ?and here's a suggestion now 1 "lest we forget." Why not have ] an alumni and aiumnae meeting next commencement. Let all 1 members whether graduates or ( "quiliiates" get together and or- 1 ganize. If deemed best we may ' get together Christmas or at some time before eommeueement ' and then we can be ready for ' work commencement to have a 1 programme. Ot course there 1 will he some defects but it's ( worth investigating. Let's hear * from trustees, teachers and alum- ( ni and, of course, from the fair ( alumnae. ( By the time The News is out again the second bout will be J over and the candidates will be rejoicing or mourning. We'll ' wait patiently till that time but here's hoping that it will not be so sail as the first primary was, that Jupiter Pluyius, Esq., will not weep so bitterly. The Columbia theatre season opens Tuesday, although there was a play there on the 25th o! August. VVo may he wrong in our judgment, but there are many good, clean <kshows" put on in this theatre < v<ry season in our opinion. However, there s ems to be some complaint on the bill for I'ue&dav night. It's a play, "A' the Fr neh Hull." f ) .it A f I I n be nrtn "vl f .,#? t ' ^ ui . j Of <*' It'Ul UlCB an* j vertiaed i3 ''The S dome Dance." ,j if is said lo be a true represent*- j lion < f ilie dance l>y tbo daugh- , tor ( f Ilcrodius for the head of j Joliu the Biptist. It in exciting . interest. everywhere and because ( of this fact and because it is at- ^ tacked by some of the leading ( actors and ac'rosess and by the ^ newspapers, it is thought that v many people will go to see it. But we won't, so don't worry. It is said to be vulgar, etc. It's * a safe bet that though it's "elec- 1 tion night" there will be a lot of "bald-headed sinners" there * Tuesday night. "Lancaster Boy" lives on the main thoroughfare out of Columbia "The street car runs right, by our door" in the words of the song, and you bet we don't ,J* mind that. We see all kinds ol ? sights from an imitation of the 1 Rock Hill "'ox cart to a "White ' Steamer Tourinjr Car" which j doesn't cost but 42,000 "bucks." * Alonrr about 5 n m th? onin. mobiliats "start right," going out c for a pleasure trip. And/in the r mornings we can see people ( "going to town" in wagons, et cetera. But to "got to the milk 11 of the cocanut" here's a tip we c 4 got this afternoon. On Monday t Labor Day will be observed and 1 on that afternoon there will he 1 seme automobile races. They s " \ THE LAI are not allowed to "run fast much" in the city for there's a speed unit. So they come out here where they have fine roade to practice. It is really annoyigj^to (ftlizepfc of ftau^dlair*, oi whichjtfyatt .park is a part. So jroufc scribe ugOt a tip" this afternoon .that,,the town council of i Eau Olaire are going to fix a speed limit, for it fp not only on i ipecial occasions thai they "run lome" but always. And if you, ] my of our fellow-readers, want to know about the ''fuss" a racing car makes, ask Col. Willie Bdward Tlyler, the bright young ion of Capt. W. B. Plyler, or ] 'Judge" Ira B. Jones, Jr., or iny of the Lancastrians who saw ^ ,he races last Fair. ' So yhen 'Lancaster Boy" gets his next 'Lancaster News" they will come . 'jest a lettle bit slower?maybe. As btated above, Labor Day ( will be observed Monday. There | will be a parade down town. ( They will come up to Hyatt Park and have some speaking ind field day exercises and so iorth and then there will be 'them races" already reterred to. What about that Bryan contribution? Thp J - ~ 1 ... IWJ Uiuppcil into the cigar boxes will be o. k., but why not send a contribution like the rest of the citie9 aud owns of South Caroliua. "Get in the game." Lancaster through 'The News" (or anybody) $25 would be all right but why not iouble that amount or why not make it even $100. so that it can be given special mention? The State Board of Education aeld a very important meeting bere Friday ami Saturday, the ( 1th and 5th. It had beveral ap peal cases, awarded scholarships, 3tc. Hon. Geo. W. Brown, a former Lancastrian aud brother 5t* Mr. W. Mcl) Brown of Lancaster, was here arguing one case. "The Handbook of South Cardine,'" gotten out last year, has Deeil SliniOUfhol ? -.ui igvioou, till a \)pendix having been added. It ivill bo remembered that the de parlment ot agriculture, imuiitration and commerce uot it out ind that Mr. A. R. Banks wrote he chapter on education. It ias a chapter on nearly eVer\ | hia^o. It will be holplul to the armor or any class of men. It ^ s taught in some schools ?nrl I solleges as a text book. It is a rery interesting book ami should ie in every school and public ibrary in South Oarolina. Worth 4 >5 now and will be worth $25 in ater years. Do you want one, t dr. Editor, or lellow-reader? t costs only twenty-five cents. , t realty costs nothing but the . quarter pays postage. It should , >e in every home in Lancaster j iounty. Why not get one? tVrite Col. E. J. Watson and he ] vill send it. i Soon the college boys and 1 '.iris return. Some have already ; 'one. Many "Freshs" start out. i L yj an nuu tU I 1118 "Dlirg" i gWd hand will be extended and hey will find a warm welcome. We are having some big rains low but here's hoping that it . vill not get liae it was last week. Mr. John T. Duncan was fined 20 by the acting recorder the , ?ther day for using "cuss words" | n the Columbia theatre on the , light of Auguat 24th when he , eased it for a campaign meetng. Mrs Belle J. Nance has ac:epted a fine position as stenogapher for M. C. Heath and , Company, Brokers. Here's congratulations on the ic'ion of the Board of Trustees < >f the Lancaster City Schools for 1 heir purpose to erect a school , inilding at the Lancaster Cotton i dills and for electing sach a tollable principal as Prof. Joseph 11 NCASTER NEWS, SEPTE Kershaw Connors. Prof. Connors is about the best successor they could have gotten to Miss Grace Gary Whisonant, who was so'highly respected and ifrho made such a capable principal. What's wrong with pushing Lancaster and Columbia, so we don't push them too near Rock Hill? Nothing. Then lets do it. i?' v cuio nwcis ueciared Illegal?Sent Out Without Au- ? thority of Democratic Executive Committee. Prom Monday's Columbia .State. Gen.
