There's evidently going to be something doing in the old tar heel town when cold weather sets in. A 1: ~ 11AU?.x!-1.. ?U 11?U poi S > ? OV.IMY the following unique "personal" recently appeared in the "society column" of an Iowa paper: "Mrs. Coulter, being confined to her bed by illness, will not be at home next Thursday as usual." LTobably she expected to take up her bed and promenade aroupd the square. The Supreme Court of South i ?rr ma rendered a decision Wednesday which is a record breaker for brevity. Here it is : "For the reasons stated by his honor, tlie circuit judge, the judgment of the Circuit Court is affirmed". 'Nougli said. The opinion is in the case of J. H. Tindall against the Piedmont Mutual Fire Insurance company of Spartanburg and was written by Judge Gary. We hope that whoever shall be elected to the legislature next Tuesday will not feel called upon to undertake to secure a repeal of the new road law when the General Assembly meets in Jan uary. Amend the Act if necessary, but do not kill it, tor it i9 the only decisive step the county has ever taken toward materially bettering the miserable condition of her highways. It is not claimed for the new law that it is perfect?far from it, possibly ?but it can not be denied that it is a movement in the right direction. More than one wellfounded objection has been made to the law, but the defects can easily be remedied by legislative amendment. Lancaster cannot aflord to go backward in this matter. Lancaster's progressive and public-spirited young daughter, Kershaw, has contributed $22 to the Bryan campaign fund. This town ought to give live times as much, and yet, notwithstanding our repeated appeals, not so much as a penny has been handed us to be forwarded to national headquarters. As we euggested the other day, somebody ought to canvass the town with a subscription list. Oheraw's board ot trade gave $100 this week to help elect Hrvan. While Lancaster, unfortunately, has no board of trade, though we have oftentimes urged the need and advantages ot such an organization, the town has, nevertheless, many enterprising bu-in ss and professional men who are just as loyal to the principles of true democracy as are the ci'i zers of Cheraw, and when approached by a solicitor of campaign funds will no doubt contribute liberally. The vote in the second primary six years ago tor the United States Senate in Lancaster conn fy was as follows: John Gary Evans, 10S9; Asbnry (\ Latimer, 7S0. In 'he recent primary Evans received in this county 2<>2, and Smith, who now makes the second race with him, I'i.Ti.j The live other candidate^ in the i first race received altogether 7<?4 votes. Now where will these votes go next Tuesday!1 ('an'i say ; wouldn't if wo could. We are not taking sides in this race, nor in any other, for that matter. Both .Smith and Evans are well known to all of our people, and THE LANCA such being the ca*e, we are satisfied that the voters would prefer to make their own choice without any advice or suggestion from us. Without intending to hurt or help either candidate however, we would call attention to the rather remarkable tact that if Mr. Evans should pet on Tuesday,in addition to his vote in the first primary, all of the votes that were cast tor Khett, .Johnstone, Martin, Lumpkin and Grace, ttie five candidates who have been dropped out, he would still lack 30fi votes of receiving as manv as did his opponent. Mr. Smith, in the first, contest We are assuming, of course, thai the men who voted for Evans and Smith in the first primary will vote tor them again. But such assumption may not be correct, for that "politics is an uncertain thing" has become an axiom, and there's no telling to what extent voters may change their minds in two weeks' time, The differences between Tail and Foraker have been reconciled and now the latter is doing all lie can to elect the Republican nominee for president?anothei exemplification of the tact that the Republicans, it makes no difference how much they may quarrel and light among them selves, know how to net together when an election is in sight.
