The conditions described by our ' Columbia contemporary are so much like those existing here, as often noted and deprecated in those columns, and its comments j* so full of sound philosophy and good counsel that we reproduce the greater part of the editorial referred to: In the prosperity of the body politic alone cm the in lividu! c find prosperity. Petty jeal- c ousies, personal dislikes and self t i&h motives on the part ot indiv- . I t idual citizens can nevr build up a strong and prosperous city. "The house divided against it- v self cannot stand" is too old an ' adage to be used in this connection; yet, no greater truth need be brought home to the people of Columbia. There is too much ' tendency here to allow personal ' dislike to clog the wheels ot pro- 1 gress. There is too much fear on c the part oi some that those whom j they do not like may prosper? t may do some act for the common . good, tor the welfare of the pen- J pie and of the city. There are too many factions trying to pull c each other down. There is too little charity for the faults ot others?too little regard for the c view-point of those who may be 1 on the other side. Does it evei t occur to you, citizen, that those fc who oppose your views may be i right? Have you ever put your- t self in their places and consider j c f-d seriously what you would a have done if you had been they? | We should all remember thatgrand principle ot hum m law : i <tThero is so much good in tin? ' worst of us. and so much bad in 1 tho best oi u , that it does n >t t become the best of u- to try to jud-' the worst ol us." What profit is there to envy Joint Smith because he is m r< sue ' cessful in busines ' Who has ] ever succeeded by envy and bit- t terness and hate, by prejudice , and slander? No community can thrive and ( grow great and strong and prosporous where no one can do right * without criticism, where no one * can make a mistake without slander, where no one can per- r lorin conscientiously a hard duty t without everlasting bitterness > and hatred. t The time lias come to Colum- t t V ! : ?7 : THE LANCASTER N ia lor better and nobler things, j L.
